Well, if I didn't care about looks at all, I would just leave it as..... I just have no interest or intent in concours contests. I own an M3 because of how it drives, not looks. Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2003 14:27:52 -0700 From: "Robert Puertas" <Puertas@cox.net> Subject: RE: [E36M3] Falken Azenis Sports Rex, my experience with the Azenis is that they get a bit greasy when they get really hot. Here in Southern California, this can happen on the second or third auto-x run. The solution for this is to get yourself one of those pump garden squirter things, and spray water on your tires between runs to cool them down. I've also used the BFG KD and the Kumho MX. I think the BFG is probably the stickiest of the three, but not worth the much greater cost. The new Kumho MX is in the middle in cost and seems to be a lot less heat sensitive than the KD's or the Azenis. Kumho is the only one of the three with a real contingency program at SCCA Solo2 events, and I like to support companies that are involved in grassroots motorsports whenever I can. Another option coming soon is the Hancook Ventus Z211 - right now it's only available in 205/50-15 for the Spec Miata crowd, but more sizes are in the works. A recent GRM tire test puts them ahead of the Toyo RA-1 and Yokohama A032R-S in performance, and comparable to the Toyo in wear. I just got a set of these two weeks ago for my '96 M3. First off, these tires run wide for their size, much like DOT R tires. I am running the 225/45-17 Falken Azenis Sport on M Double Spoke II 17" x 8-1/2" rims at all four corners. When I measured their section width when mounted on the above rim, they were wider than the 235/40-17 Michelin Pilot Sports and as wide as the Michelin Pilot Sports 245/40-17. If they were any wider I would have to run spacers in the front to get them to clear the strut housing. On the street they seem no stiffer than the Pilot Sports. Traction is much better, but I expect overall tire life to be a shorter. However, based on their cost and the average life I got out of the Pilot Sports, I expect my tire bill will be unchanged. Based on other's experience, I am sure they will get a little noiser over time. I autocrossed on them yesterday at the SFR SCCA event in Oakland and I was pleasantly surprised by their performance. My guess is that I am a second to a second and a half faster on them than the Pilot Sports on a 50 second course. However, they are probably the same time back from my Hooiser A3S03's that I have mounted on 17" x 9" SSR Comps. Based on two weeks of street driving and one autox, I am very satisfied with their performance. It will be interesting to see how they handle and wear over time. -- Rex Tener rex_tener@yahoo.com 1996 BMW M3, SCCA SFR Solo II Street-Mod Light (as in lightly modified) #173

#3. Fluidyne radiators - from James Clay

Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2003 18:22:02 -0400 From: "James Clay" <james@bimmerworld.com> Subject: Fluidyne radiators We just got back from the Road Atlanta World Challenge race. Fluidyne was there and brought the new E36 radiator by for me since I have been whining for it for months now! I think it was worth the wait. This one is absolutely perfect. It was the first radiator made from the new jig (the old one turned out to be bad) and had to go back to NC unfortunately. All of the dimensions are dead-on compared to the stock piece we had at the track. This one even has accommodations for the auxiliary fan and the automatic transmission cooler! Anyway, production starts July 7 at 10 units per week. We have half of the first week, but I think that most or all are spoken for (it always takes a day or two for me to get up to speed after a race weekend). We also have 5 from the second week's production, so delivery should be fairly quick. Racer price is $689, email or call for further information. Take a thin piece of cardboard or stiff plastic and slide it into the player on the underside of the cartridge. There is a pin about 1/2 way back, generally in the center that holds the cartridge in place. If you touch it with the cardboard/plastic/stiff material of your choice, the cartridge should pop right out. Email me if you need more specific directions...
