It looks pretty good in the dash with it's amber lighting, plays MP3s and is a quality piece. I've read you can still find some new ones out there. You could try Crutchfield. Otherwise, try for a used one. I see them on Bimmerforums from time to time. If you still have the factory speakers in front, I wouldn't change out the amp. The factory amp has built in crossovers for each channel. You won't be able to duplicate that with an aftermarket amp. Best to stay with the factory amp unless you want to upgrade the front speakers too. I can always fix it by taking out the disks and turning the player off and on, but its such a PITA that I want another solution. I was figuring on changing the head unit w/ a in-dash cd/mp3 player. Anybody have a favorite recommendation? I have heard of problems w/ radio reception on some aftermarket units since our cars dont have an external antenna. > >While I am asking questions, how about an inexpensive amp that will fit where the factory amp mounts and be fairly easy to install? > >Rear speakers have been replaced w/ rockford fosgate (broke stock while changes rsm's... doh!) > >The car is not driven much, so more basic recommendations are appreciated. Date: Sun, 13 Jul 2003 22:49:50 -0400 From: eevans@planetc.com Subject: CD changer head unit ?s Don, I have an Alpine model 7178 head unit that controls the Alpine 6 disk CD Changer model # CHM-S620 that I also have. I also have a few BMW issue CD changers if you want to go back and stay w/ the OEM head unit. Can anybody tell me if that model will play MP3 also. I also have some almost new MBQuart speakers and an a Phoenix aftermarket amp that was in my '99 M3 when I bought her, I'm back to OEM and not an audiophile so all this stuff is just collecting dust. Let me know if any of this stuff might be of interest.
