Just imagine with 7 HP, probably would have to go with drag slicks to maintain control of the car. People, please get real with your posts of a new product, if you are promoting, just make a short blurb about it, but to say something crazy like 5hp results in a huge difference in chirp sounds of 2nd gear, a bit over the top. That is about the most anti subjective test I have heard of. I have a $100 that says in a blindfolded test, 9 out of 10 cant tell the difference in 15hp. Look at the gearing for 1/2 shift. Shifting at 7k rpm puts you at ~4200 rpms in second. Now look at the hp/tq gain at 4200 rpms... 5 hp / 5.8 ft-lbs. I'll be the first to admit that 5 hp doesn't sound like much. I have a miata with 320 rwhp. I can't tell a 20 rwhp change on that car. I think you guys are being too hard on the guy. When I installed my EvoSport pullies and removed the fan clutch, there was definitely an extra "peppy-ness" to the engine. I think the throttle response was much better, increasing the possibility of the 2nd gear chirp. Of course it could be a host of other variables as well. I don't dyno my car because I don't race. I don't need to know that I'm at XXX hp other than bragging rights if I'm (or you're) not racing. Shedding 100lbs shows 0 hp increase but I'm willing to bet most people on this list will feel the benefits. BTW my shark sticker definitely made my car faster. <g> -Bobby

#7. M3 window adventure... Help! - from Dave Spragg

Date: Wed, 16 Jul 2003 18:06:12 -0400 From: "Dave Spragg" <david.spragg@comcast.net> Subject: M3 window adventure... Help! Hi Gang, Ok... I got some time to spend in the garage with the race car windows again. After a quick trip to Autobahn and another to Sansossio Autobody in Natick I had two passenger side window sets ready to go with fresh new rivets (don't ask) where I had removed one. :) I had one working and the other would just click and was playing with both with them not installed in the door to try and figure out what the difference was. I think I found out but the result is a drag. It seems that if you run the motor to it's furthest extent you can "lock up" a window motor unit and all it will do is click. So... You guessed it... I now have two complete window motor units with that only "click" when you try to run them up or down. This is the relay click you will hear if there is too much resistance for the window to go. At least I think that is what it is and is probably for safety or for motor protection. Anyone ever done this? No need to admit it publicly but I am curious as to if anyone else has ever done this (just might make me feel better) and if they figured out any way to make the unit serviceable again. Right now I tried pretty darn hard to move the main gear by hand with no luck. With my apparent curse here I bet if I offer free service work on your cars no one will take me up on it... Even if they would have before! ;) Dave Spragg dave@spragg.com 99 M3 street 92 318is #330 IP (95 M3 engine and suspension)

I was playing with the car and noticed that the windows hadn't rolled all the way down, so I rolled them the rest of the way (1/2" maybe). I finished working on the car and tried to roll the windows up. Click. Nothing. Tried a few more times, same thing happened. Went inside and got the Bentley, tried again, nothing. Went back inside, waited a bit, read the bentley again (about synchronizing the windows). Closed the door this time and I was able to get the windows to go up and resynchronize. I had to have the doors closed, otherwise the windows wouldn't move at all. I'm not sure what that has to do with it, but it must complete some circuit... -josh --- Dave Spragg <david.spragg@comcast.net> wrote: > Date: Wed, 16 Jul 2003 18:06:12 -0400 > From: "Dave Spragg" <david.spragg@comcast.net> > Subject: M3 window adventure... Can someone call off the dogs? I don't have any experience with underdrive pulleys on the E36 cars, but Robert's post sounded perfectly rational to me. Given that a UDP kit frees up some power whether you are putting a load on the engine or not, I could actually see how the reduced drag would cause the engine/flywheel to spin down less rapdily during the shift, resulting in more stored energy in the flywheel when the clutch is re-engaged in the next gear. Neglecting a whole bunch of other effects, the extra energy in the flywheel would be roughly related to the integral of the energy no longer lost to drag during the entire duration of the shift, which could very well be perceivable. The freed total power that the UDP releases is roughly on par with the drag of an automotive air conditioning system. I'd sure be able to tell if it's on with my eyes closed, especially based on the drag when I let off the gas, and by the throttle response. Thanks for taking the time to post a writeup, Robert. - Chris

I have a 95 3.0 liter and a 99 3.2 liter and what you are feeling is the difference in the engines torque (respectable amount) in the midrange and the difference in the diff ratios (3.15 for the 95 M3 and 3.23 for the 99M3) combined. Both are small changes but they add up to making the 95 M3 feel like it's lacking good gas or something. That said, Jay's original post cracked me up. Jay, your just so boring for a guy devoted to suspension science and speed! ;) Now... Back to adding yellow things to my car for extra speed since I can't make the window motors work...
