When the A/C is turned on the A/C compressor clutch engages which causes the engine to drive the compressor which uses some of the power that is normally available to drive the wheels. It's not a characteristic that is unique to M3's, any car with air conditioning will exhibit the same symptoms. A few well placed "Type R" stickers will solve this problem for you, they add at least 15HP each. Stick them directly on the A/C compressor so they only add the extra HP when the A/C is on, that way you won't lose control of the car because of all those extra "ponies". I got to "read" the footer five or more times the last couple of digests. Those of us in digest mode I know would appreciate it. Thanks in advance. Regards, Rich

Hmm, please elaborate as I think list members could benefit. I am curious as I recently bought my suspension from TC Kline and have almost all positive comments. I can't say the same about another vendor that I originally attempted to purchase my suspension from and gave me more run around, bad/contradictory information or just plain didn't answer my questions. Although I ended up not buying my suspension from the other vender, I still purchased other parts even with my trepidation (camber/caster plates and RTAB shims) it took forever to obtain those parts compared to their estimated delivery times. My TC Kline suspension was on my doorstep one day after ordering and everything was in order. It sat on a shelf for a couple of months while I waited for the other parts from the other vendor. But I find that it takes a lap or two for them to warm up... for that reason, they probably aren't well suited for autocross. - Bill

Date: Thu, 17 Jul 2003 17:50:34 +0000 From: gobuffs93@comcast.net Subject: Re: [E36M3] suspension R&R I ordered the kit late Wednesday afternoon before July 4 (so July 2). I was told "Yeah we have that in stock it will go out tomorrow." I said "Great, can you email me the tracking numbers?" They say "Sure no problem." They say they will be to me early next week (like Tuesday). Monday they call and say "Those springs have been back ordered for months. Actually over a year." They ended up sending me some Vogtland springs that they said "Are better quality than the H&Rs". Yeah ok, but they just want to sell me some springs. The springs finally arrived Monday, shocks Tuesday...only a week later than they said. Not that big of a deal but when they said "Yes we have all that in stock and it will go out tomorrow".... I was also expecting something around $830 including shipping and it grew to $855. Now back to the original question... #8. Musings and UDPs - from Carl Stern

Date: Thu, 17 Jul 2003 15:14:47 -0600 From: Carl Stern <Carl.Stern@xilinx.com> Subject: Musings and UDPs The myth of the differential ratio? 95 3.0 M3 vs. the 96+ 3.2 M3 My math says: 3.23 diff with a stock 245/40-17 tire is actually geared higher than 3.15 diff with a stock 235/40-17 tire. Am I missing something here? So if a 3.2 car feels torquier, it's because it is. UDPs How much hp does it take to drive a water pump and a power steering pump? Slowing down the rpms of the water pump must mean a slower flow of coolant through the engine. Wouldn't this reduce cooling? Is this ok at all temperatures and engine demands? If the water pump is redesigned to push the same amount of water at slower rpms, then the amount of work is the same and there shouldn't be any net gain. I know nothing about power steering pumps, but I guess the speed at which it turns is less critical since boost is maintained across all engine rpms. Is there a threshold below which it becomes ineffective? Is that below underdriven idle speeds? At Bandimere Speedway in Denver, my stock 95 at stock weight ran a 15.6 1/4 mile. (Yes, high altitude clearly takes its toll on power) I took it there when I got it for the heck of it. Cheaper and more fun than a dyno run. So how much time would that UDP set knock off? if a power mod doesn't translate to real world acceleration anyway than what good is it? I'm not a drag racer, I run at open track days and DEs like many of you. For that matter, how much will a JC chip, intake, euro HFM setup do for a 1/4 mile time? Anyone measured it? Carl Stern

'95 M3 to update the suspension(RTAB or other, reinforce suspension pickup points, etc) to make it like the '96 and newer cars. Also, anything else you guys would do to make my 3-6 track days a year more enjoyable and not rip up the car(longevity stuff)? I had an E30M3 with lots of stuff done to the suspension and brakes and the motor to improve performance and longevity. Thanks, Scott
