While driving over 30mph or so the steering starts rotating left and right about 1/4". The faster I go the higher the frequency of this rotation. Any suggestions as to what to look at as the possible source of the problem? The lower control arm bushings are in good shape and the pivot bearing at the elbows were replaced about 5K ago. The car does not drift and behaves when braking. Wheels? Alignment? Steering tie rods? ??? David Holeman

The car does not drift >and behaves when braking. I might be stating the obvious here and perhaps you ruled it out, but since it wasn't mentioned in your post... Sounds like one of the front wheels is out of balance to me. The suspension doesn't rotate with the wheels, so if you have a vibration in the front that's speed-dependent (gets worse as you go faster), it's probably a balance issue. The force generated by an imbalance goes up with the *square* of speed, so it can come on in a hurry over a certain speed. If the problem appeared out of the blue, it may be that you actually threw a weight. Depending on how well they were installed, it's possible. I once had a crappy balance with crimp weights at a chain tire store on my other car, and within a week I had thrown the weights on three of the four wheels. (It was no fun on the highway!) Take it to a shop known for doing good balance work. I recently had my wheels balanced on a road-force machine, and the results were outstanding. You may want to call some local tire shop/car dealers in your area to find out if someone has a road force machine. I think most BMW dealers probably have one, given how sensitive our cars are to balance issues. - Chris

It covers everything you need to know about doing the cam job. My old roommate did his cams and head gasket without ever touching a car before. He had basic knowledge and had worked on bicycles in college, haha. But none the less, I was impressed at how quickly he did it. Since then he does all of his own work and can change a M3 head gasket fairly quickly. As to the tool, depending on where you live, there should be a local shop that you could talk to. Pay them a deposit that covers the cost of the tool and then give them like $50 or something to cover rental. It's good to build up a relationship with a local shop for help when you get into a bind etc. Also, I have borrowed tools in every city I have lived in and in all cases, they just wanted a deposit and didn't charge me anything for renting the tool. In those cases, I made it a point to make sure I could get atleast 3 people to use that shop to repay them for their help. Just an idea. However I concluded out that while renting the cam and VANOS tools would cost in the area of $250, that doesn't include the expertise to know how to do the job. I'm a decent home mechanic and have a very well equipped garage, but this is an expensive engine to put at risk. Checking with my local dealer, who has a mechanic I trust, I found that the flat rate for cam replacement is 5.5 hours. At $70/hour that's $380, or only $130 more to have the installation done properly by a professional. That's a no-brainer decision. Including incidentals I ended up paying $400, money well spent. I installed the rest of the cam kit (injectors, intake manifold, plumbing adapters, cold air intake, software) a couple of weeks later. The car ran just fine with only the cams, but performs pretty much as stock in casual driving. It took the rest of the kit to release the full performance potential.
