#1. FS: custom exhaust - from Paragonloan@aol.com

Date: Tue, 29 Jul 2003 08:48:37 EDT From: Paragonloan@aol.com Subject: FS: custom exhaust I am selling my Beloved M3 and before I do I am removing the exhaust I had custom made. It is a single Supertrapp that starts after the converters and becomes a single 3" exhaust with two mandrel bends and goes to a 5" out. I have 12 backing plates for the exhaust to customize the amount of back pressure you would like to have. With minimum back pressure it is about as load as a B&B, with no plates it is about as loud as a Harley ( you choose). the total weight from the cat back is about 10 LBS. a quick way to shave 40 lbs of the rear of your car. Hunt, I don't believe those are LEDs, but rather an LCD display whose incandescent bulb backlight you can replace. If you Google on "BMW radio backlight" you'll find some info on this. However if you aren't comfortable with disassembling the radio, I have my take-out HK head unit (with security code card). Make me an offer. Neil 96 M3

I am seriously thinking of picking it up for my 95. Second, I would do the same, but I can't find a dealer anywhere in CT that charges $70/hr. Private shops charge 85-90 by me and I don't think they'll have the right tools. Anyone in the Tri state area have a recommend install shop for the cams? However I concluded out that while renting the cam and VANOS tools would cost in the area of $250, that doesn't include the expertise to know how to do the job. I'm a decent home mechanic and have a very well equipped garage, but this is an expensive engine to put at risk. Checking with my local dealer, who has a mechanic I trust, I found that the flat rate for cam replacement is 5.5 hours. At $70/hour that's $380, or only $130 more to have the installation done properly by a professional. That's a no-brainer decision. Including incidentals I ended up paying $400, money well spent. I installed the rest of the cam kit (injectors, intake manifold, plumbing adapters, cold air intake, software) a couple of weeks later. The car ran just fine with only the cams, but performs pretty much as stock in casual driving. It took the rest of the kit to release the full performance potential. Last weekend was my first full track weekend since the installation, and the difference was obvious. Not just to me, but to a couple of friends who wondered why my car was now so fast. (Driver remains about the same however...) The equation would presumably be slightly different for your 95, since part of the kit's benefit for my car is opening up the intake with the much bigger OBD-I manifold. The 3.0 M3 has always been happier at high revs than the 3.2 version. > Second, I would do the same, but I can't find a dealer anywhere in CT that > charges $70/hr. You right and left coasters will pay more. Still, even at $85-90/hour, professional installation will only cost you $100 or so more than me. I would have liked to do the installation myself, just for the interest of it, but decided that the risk/benefit didn't work that way. Neil 96 M3

#5. Custom Dinan/Benfer style CAI for under $90 - from ChuckBrazeau@aol.com
Top
Date: Tue, 29 Jul 2003 10:15:32 -0400 From: ChuckBrazeau@aol.com Subject: Custom Dinan/Benfer style CAI for under $90 I've been hesitant to buy a CAI (even thought i've wanted one badly) because there are so many different versions, build qualities, and price ranges. I'd thought about building my own for a long time, but wasn't sure if i wanted to build a heat shielded CAI or an in-the-bumper style. I really like the in-the-bumper style CAI's because i think they look cleaner than the heat shielded versions, but the Dinan intake was WAY over my budget and even though the Benfer was a cheaper alternative, i still thought i could build one cheaper (plus, i love to experiment :-D). So, after researching and contemplating the whole thing for months, i finally took the plunge and built myself one for under $90 (includes shipping and tax for all the parts)!!! Here's a pic of it installed... http://www.brazeauracing.com/photos/customcai08a.jpg The full write-up with pics and a parts list with source/price info is here... http://www.brazeauracing.com/customcai.htm Chuck Brazeau 1995 BMW M3 - Violet on Black SCCA Solo2 - Street Modified #95 http://www.brazeauracing.com/

I've had a friend break his cam shaft installed from a certified BMW tech that was moonlighting. What I was told is that the in-line 6 cams are very long and need to be tightened very carefully and by the book. Also the Bentley manual for the VANOS installation is wrong. It never tells you to clock the VANOS gear. Just two reasons why you might want to rethink saving the $400-500 bucks. steve p.s. I also have the Eurosport Cam kit and love it. So long as you are patient and take things slowly, you should be fine. Reinstalling the VANOS is a bit tricky as even the BMW TIS is wrong. I know that my VANOS was installed incorrectly by me because I followed the TIS. I spoke to a racer/engine builder at VIR who gave me some helpful tips about reinstalling it....so one of these days, I'll redo it. Anyway, if you're in the tri-state area, I can help any of you out with VANOS R&R or cam installs. Chester --- Steven Tom <stom@qualcomm.com> wrote: > Neil is right about risks on the installation. Yes, one of the special tools is a camshaft hold-down tool which is used when loosening or tightening the cam journal bolts. This prevents bending or breaking the camshafts, which are hollow. > Also the Bentley manual for the VANOS installation is wrong. It never > tells you to clock the VANOS gear. Just two reasons why you might want to > rethink saving the $400-500 bucks. Correct timing of the VANOS is critical. There's a procedure for applying air pressure to the VANOS unit and measuring the advance. Again, I haven't done it myself, so elected to have an experienced person take care of this. Having said which, if the tools had been conveniently available locally, and more importantly I could have worked with somebody familiar with the procedure, then I might have done it myself. > p.s. The descriptive text talks about 300hp (ES) or 295hp (turner) with this mod, but when looking at the dyno charts I don't see anything near these numbers. A little over 250 is about all she wrote. What am I missing? Is this one of those at the crank verses at the wheel issues? Steve Stoner
