Replace the plastic thermostat housing with an aluminum one while you're in there. Totally normal. If you are replacing the thermostat you might want to replace the dreaded water pump too and switch to a aluminium housing. Joe ------------- Good afternoon, What explains a Temperature Gauge Needle (1996 M3, 67K) that reads cooler AFTER the car has already gotten up to temperature ? For example, you casually drive long enough for the needle to point slightly to the right of straight up (12:00). Then, a few minutes later it's reading cooler (11:00). And if you stop and idle, it returns slightly to the right of 12:00, but never higher. Would it be normal for the Gauge to decrease that much if you went from a sunny area to a shady area, or if your average speed and airflow increased (slow country roads/traffic vs. highway speeds ) ? Once it's hot enough to read 12:00, wouldn't it just stay there (or higher if you're actually overheating) ? After driving about 30 minutes in 80-90 degree weather and shutting the car off, is it normal for small puddles of water to form underneath the exhaust system (drips seem to come from the catalytic converter and/or resonator area, but not from the muffler or tips) ? Autocrossing with it off is, um, interesting, and not worth flat-spotting a tire, imho. My thermostat had completely exploded inside its housing. The spring retainer that keeps the whole thing together had let loose and the spring had sprung. What that meant was that the thermostat was always open and letting coolant by. So I would start the car, at idle there isn't a lot of air going past the radiator so it would come up to temperature, never over because there was good coolant going through the radiator. Then when I drove the car around it would get cold; too much water flow through a radiator with a lot of air going through it. This happened in the winter and it got really cold, in fact the heat didn't work. The drive home from the office fix was a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator. After a trip to the dealer fix was a replacement of the thermostat and the thermostat housing gasket. Matt was helpful and price was good (no association). I started with the drivers side. I have a 98 M3 coupe. With the Dinan intake and filter the light is a tight fit. I have to exert quite a bit of pressure to get the screws to line up. The bottom of the light pushes against the top of the Dinan filter and prevents it from easing in without pressure. Forget about re installing the metal dinan bracket on top of the filter housing.... The passenger side was a breeze. Has anyone rigged up something different with the intake and filter. Am I missing something? Shel Hart 1998 M3 Not for sale. Decided after driving 10 different cars (new + used) that I can't part with it. The 350Z didn't cut it....
