Date: Tue, 29 Jul 2003 21:58:55 -0400 From: eevans@planetc.com Subject: Diff drain socket info Tucker, Just tonight was in AutoZone and found a pack of 3 metric Hex head sockets including the 17mm one all for about $7. Years ago I found a 17mm allen wrench and cut a piece off of it long enough to fit inside of my 17mm socket and have used it for 10 years, plus I still have the rest of the allen wrench if I ever need it. A lot less trouble buying one from AutoZone, but that wasn't available back then ;-). Also I think Sears carries them now. I've searched several auto part stores to no avail. Can someone steer me in the direction of a vendor that sells them?? Tucker Ryals 1995 M3

#3. Transmission Oil Leakage - from KResener@aol.com
Top
Date: Tue, 29 Jul 2003 22:13:44 EDT From: KResener@aol.com Subject: Transmission Oil Leakage Few weeks ago at a DE, I had a problem with my transmission oil spilling (leaking?) out of the top of the tranny, running down the tranny and blowing onto my exhaust pipe and smoking. It was bad enough that I was actually black flagged. Consensus in the paddock area was that since this was the first time I'd run R compounds, that the lateral g loads were higher and the oil was slopping higher and spilling out the top of the transmission, where apparently there is a vent. I solved by pulling the fill plug (it wasn't overfilled as it didn't leak out of the fill hole) and siphoning out enough oil so that it was three quarters of an inch or so below the level of the fill hole. I have concerns about this fix being an appropriate long term fix though, as now I am running with a less than filled transmission. Anyone else experience this? Any suggestions? Should I attempt to plug the vent on the top of the transmission and top off the tranny oil? Any suggestions appreciated. Kurt '95 ///M3

The Bentley manual shows that the steering wheel has to be removed to pull the instrument cluster to replace the bulbs. Is there any way around this? I'd rather not have to pull the airbag and the wheel unless absolutely necessary. --Sean '98 M3/4

Hmmm .... my LWT is a track car only on R compounds, and I've never experienced tranny venting like you describe. I use Redline ATF. I have experienced differential venting (the good kind, where there some leakage from the vent on top -- not when there's a huge hole in the side of the diff casing... :-o ) and that was due to the diff fluid (Redline 75W90) boiling. I put a Rogue Engineering cover on and the temps are much lower now. Frankly, I think it's unlikely that your tranny was venting. I would not recommend running it any lower than the bottom of the fill plug line. Trannies need all the cooling they can get, and the ATF fluid is the only help they have. My guess is that you have a larger-order problem with your tranny -- perhaps the vent hole / plug is much larger than it should be (maybe it's missing?), or the fill or drain plugs are loose, or the rear seal is bad. Also, other areas that my be leaking further forward and running back to the exhaust are power steering fluid (if the res. is FULL, it can boil out the vent), and a leaking rear main engine seal. Power steering fluid is ATF, so it'll look/smell like tranny fluid; rear main seal leaks oil, obviously :-) My 2 cents, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 - Been there, leaked that 1993 325is #44 JP/A5 - Ditto

It's pretty tight, and it will deform the soft front of the dash a bit, but it is possible (wigglewigglewiggle :-)). I've had the cluster out of the M3 a couple of times to replace bulbs without removing the wheel. Cheers, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 1993 325is #44 JP/A5
