#1. E36 M3 Tranny Leak (updates) - from RFKoby@aol.com

Date: Wed, 30 Jul 2003 08:46:42 -0400 From: RFKoby@aol.com Subject: E36 M3 Tranny Leak (updates) the early E36 M3, 1994 production year, transimissions are prone to blowing the oil out of the top vent breather. The oil drips down on top of the exhaust and smokes. This is a very common problem. I brought my car back to the dealer while it was still under warranty. There was some kind of update / recall? for the transmission breather which got installed. 2 DE's later, the tranny was still leaking and smoking badly. The car was now out of warranty, but since I complained and reported the problem before it was out of warranty, the dealership agreed to get me a BMW remanufactured tranny and all I had to pay was labor.... This fixed the problem. If the vent update does not fix your problem, and the tranny replacement is out of the question... try running a THICKER oil like RedLine MT90. The tranny and diff temps run VERY HIGH on track cars and the MTL is just too thin at temps over 250^F. Beside that, the thicker oil will offer more protection. bob 95 M3 (lots trick stuff, lots of track miles, custom camber plates) > -------------------- 3 -------------------- > Date: Tue, 29 Jul 2003 22:13:44 EDT > From: KResener@aol.com > Subject: Transmission Oil Leakage > > Few weeks ago at a DE, I had a problem with my transmission oil spilling > (leaking?) out of the top of the tranny, running down the tranny and blowing onto > my exhaust pipe and smoking. It was still working, if you look really closely at it you could tell the numbers were there. Somebody on the list had said that since it is an LCD, it's not lit by a bulb. Made sense to me. Later that same day, the LCD started working normally and it hasn't done that since. Call it a glitch in the matrix.. Andrej '97 M3

Firstly, it ruins the predictability you'd get from "both feet in" because the varying traction at each wheel causes the computer to vary the braking force unevenly. That means even if you go off in a straight line, you're pretty much guaranteed to spin as different wheels get different amounts of braking. Secondly, you probably won't actually stop until the car hits something because the traction on wet grass or mud is so minimal that the computer will barely allow the brakes to engage at all. There are probably a few people on the list who've seen or experienced the painful results of all that... :( -Garrett --- Gerry <gerry@parallel-mkt.com> wrote: > Garrett, > Why do you think that DE in the rain with the ABS > off is a good idea? > Gerry

Just remove the cluster, no need to remove the wheel, pull the bulb and take it to your local dealer. Chris T.
