No, the wheels were not chocked. I need to find a used replacement jack ASAP. I assume that all E-36 jacks are the same. If not, the car is a 95 M3. If you have one that you would be willing to sell at a reasonable price your can E-mail me privately. Miles Hayes Clarksville, TN Old Hickory Chapter BMWCCA

#6. Questions about Oil Change Procedure - from Newman, Christopher
Top
Date: Mon, 11 Aug 2003 11:25:00 -0400 From: "Newman, Christopher" <CNewman@LSAC.org> Subject: Questions about Oil Change Procedure Good morning, Does anyone know the appropriate Torque settings for the Oil Pan bolt (drain plug) and the long bolt that holds down the cover for the Oil Filter housing ? What are the consequences of Under-tightening or Over-tightening these bolts ? If not tight enough, you get leaks. If too tight, you could strip the threads. Are there other less-obvious ones ? Is the Oil Pan and Oil Filter housing made out of iron, aluminum, or something else ? If you do Over-tighten and strip the threads, is that a costly mistake, or can the threads be re-tapped ? Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

I was in a hurry in the previous oil change and I didn't use the torque wrench and tightened the drain plug too much. The bolt snapped and I found out when I tried to change oil this past weekend. Only the top half came off (about 1 1/2 turns.) Curiously, the oil came out too. I had to have the car towed to the mechanic and he took care of it. He said the bolt was designed to snap so the thread in the oil pan won't strip. The pan is aluminum. That is the first time something like this happened to me ... I will use my torque wrench from now on. I forgot what the torque spec is, but if you go to the list website www.bmw- m.net and go under technical procedures, there is a write up for oil change and the torque speci sthere. -Johnny 98 M3/4 -- mailto:mclee@ieee.org > Date: Mon, 11 Aug 2003 11:25:00 -0400 > From: "Newman, Christopher" <CNewman@LSAC.org> > Subject: Questions about Oil Change Procedure > > > Good morning, > Does anyone know the appropriate Torque settings for the Oil Pan bolt (drain > plug) and the long bolt that holds down the cover for the Oil Filter housing > ? > > What are the consequences of Under-tightening or Over-tightening these bolts > ? > If not tight enough, you get leaks. I recommend Sound Innovations in Hayward (http://www.soundinnovations.com) - as a matter of fact, I think I did, last week :-) They did the install of my Clifford alarm in the M3. I'm very satisfied with the work they did. Cheers, Jim Bassett
