The bolt snapped and I found out when I > tried to change oil this past weekend. Only the top half came off (about 1 1/2 > turns.) Curiously, the oil came out too. Not really that curious, the bolt is hollow. Once the head is broken off, the oil will drain out of the center of the bolt. The bolt is designed to shear to avoid stripping the threads in the oil pan which would be a more costly repair. The part that remains in the pan is easily removed once the head breaks off. A replacement bolt is less than $5. Regards, Rich

Are there other less-obvious ones ? That pretty much covers it. Stripping the oil pan or the oil filter housing isn't too fun. You can helicoil the oil pan (possibly on the car if you are careful to remove all the shavings, otherwise you have to remove it which will cost $$$, might as well check the oil pump nut while you are there in this case). Putting in a helicoil on the oil filter housing could be tricky for the housing lid bolt due to it's location. You would have to remove it to do it and it may make more sense to replace the housing (I have a spare if anyone wants one...). The oil pan nut is designed to shear before stripping the oil pan, so this is added safety margin to avoid stripping the oil pan. > Is the Oil Pan and Oil Filter housing made out of iron, aluminum, or > something else ? Aluminum....nice and light, but soft too.... > If you do Over-tighten and strip the threads, is that a costly mistake, or > can the threads be re-tapped ? It can be costly, see above. Regards, Rich 95 M3 - the old oil filter housing was stripped when messing with an ill fitting JTD ODB once and had to helicoil it...now it has a euro oil cooler.

#4. Schrick Cam Suggestions - from Dorffer, Rich
Top
Date: Mon, 11 Aug 2003 16:40:09 -0400 From: "Dorffer, Rich" <RDORFFER@CleIndians.com> Subject: Schrick Cam Suggestions Does anyone know what the specs of the Schrick cams supplied with the E36 M3 3.0 OBDI and 3.2 OBDII Eurosport/Conforti kits are? I believe they are 264 intake/256 exhaust with 11.2 lift but I am not certain. Are the cams the same in each kit (i.e., are they interchangeable)? I thought the OE cams were different between the 3.0 and the 3.2 (not sure what the differences are though) since the part numbers are different. Obviously, these cams are widely accepted now for street use. Does anyone have a different recommendation for streetable aftermarket cams for an E36 M3 3.0 OBDI? Custom tuning would be performed either way so that isn't an issue. Best regards, Rich

The article said that the auto companies were very concerned that someone else might salvage the ship if they didn't and parts would find their way into their distribution system. Their greatest concern was liability if it came to light that any of the sunken parts had been used. Apparently, they intend to crush the cars once they have been recovered. -Murray Mark responded: One wonders why they would spend $39 million to raise that pile of junk? It is a nice upgrade IMO. But, my AM reception is definitely worse than the OE C33 head unit and I get more alternator whine/engine noise through the speakers now. Is there something I can do to remedy this issue with the CD43 head unit? Regards, Rich
