Brett Anderson told me of a number of motors in which he saw the failure. He also said it was easy to tell which retainers were close to failing by the difficulty in removing them, which may or may not have been related to misshifts or bouncing off the rev limiter. When I had my retainers updated in 2000 (on my 6/95 prod. date M3), they all were easily removed hence a decent indication of no significant misshifts or significant bouncing off the rev limiter according to Brett. SOON! FWIW, my experience is that our cars tend to run at about 200f or so and will spike to about 225f on a 100 degree day with the AC on in traffic. WatterWetter does seem to drop the temp by about 5-10 degrees, as advertised. Best results are achieved when at least 50 percent or greater distilled water is used in the system. I basically leave whatever BMW coolant is in the block there, and fill the radiator with 2 bottles watter wetter and distilled water. Erik Lind MPACT Motorsports

I really don't like the way it sounds, but when I go the occasional track day (non race car) sometimes it is easier to hang in 3rd and bounce off the limiter for a second or two, than going to fourth for a moment. Is this doing damage to my 3.2l engine? I suppose it could be put forth that since it's a street car I should just shift to fourth and not sweat it, which is true, but I'm more interested in the issue of bouncing off the rev limiter. And it occurs to me that I have a Dinan chip which I believe raises the rev limiter. If there's an issue does this compund it? I did not mind putting my winters on I liked them > so much. <aol>Me too.</aol> I've had the 225/50R 16 LM-22s on my M3 for the last two winters and I've been very happy with them. In the wet and dry, they feel like all-seasons. Not great, but not squirmy and noisy like Q-rated snow tires. I'm not tempted to switch back to the S03s *too* early in the spring. We had real snow in the DC area last winter, and they worked fine in that too. As a result of constantly working late, I was first to attack a snowy empty parking lot several times (Didn't even have to break out the "I'm not doing donuts, officer; I'm doing improvised skidpad training" speech), and they spun and recovered entertainingly ^W in a very educational manner with no surprises. They were okay on plowed-but-still-snowy roads as well, and on plowed-and-melted-and-refrozen crusty crap. They track other people's tire tracks about as badly as you'd expect from a 225mm wide snow tire. Haven't tried them on smooth ice, but I suspect that they're really bad on it. -- David Ripton dripton@ripton.net

In their testing CR found it trailed the winter sport M2 and the 210 snowsport in every category but handling, where it tied on their 5 tier system ('every category' being snow traction, ice braking, dry braking, wet braking, and hydroplaning). Their conclusion? "Best suited to areas where snow is less severe. Quiet ride." I've tried them on a X5 and a Jetta III VR6 and was not impressed by how easily they skated across slushy surfaces. Definitely closer to a performance all season than most winter tires... Call me contrarian, but I'd rather drive on some of these tires year-round than many an 'all-season' - H rated snow tires have sidewalls that are fairly taut and conventional (non-multicell) rubber that's closer to a summer tires than the rubber used in an all-season 50,60, or 80K mile tire. There's also a lot of forgotten fun to be had in *reducing* the grip of the M3, a car that British scribes and scribblers have called 'overtyred'.. (This is an interesting read, especially towards the end: http://www.caranddriver.com/xp/Caranddriver/columns/2001/May/200105_columns_bedard.xml?) -daanesh, who's always been curious to try a 215/45R17 on his 95 just to see >"Tire Rack give a pretty good rating for this tire in 17" www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Michelin&tireModel=Pilot+Alpin" >"Good luck with finding a set of winter tires that are decent in snow and ice and good in the dry. It just doesn't happen. <snip> I've heard good things about the Michelin Artic Alpin."Get more from the Web. FREE MSN Explorer download : http://explorer.msn.com
