#1. Diff gears and the 3.91 - from James Clay

You can get any of them new if you want to spend about $800, but used is usually the better alternative. Drag racers use cranks from the highest mileage engines they can find because they are proven. I think gears that are not abused are similar. I just tossed a 5.44 that had cracked ring teeth - killed me to do it, but the damage if any is obvious if you know how to look. I have some custom sets in the works for E46 M3 that are going to run about $1,600 for gears alone - I personally don't want to pay that much if the alternative for the E36 is so nice. 3.91 - I have put a few of these on cars in the shop. One was a 6 speed conversion so the final ratio is basically the same as stock. The other two actually started with a 3.91 and were manual transmission conversions. I think the 3.91 is on the high end of the good range. I have a 3.73 in my car with a 6 speed and I could see having it with only 5 gears if I didn't spend a lot of time on the highway. I have a 3.45 Euro built on the shelf for the car when the 3.8 goes in (whenever that is) - the engine will have the torque to pull it and the car will never be on the track so gear selection isn't as much of an issue. I run 225/45-17's all around on my stock '95. A great daily driver tire, although we haven't seen enough rain this year here in SoCal for me to judge them in that category. I've also done a track day and a couple of auto-x's on them and was quite pleased. Robert Puertas

Zaino won't hide flaws at all but with some serious prep work it'll give an amazing shine. Lasts for months, very resistant to birdshit, tree sap etc. My son got hon. mention at BMWCCA Ofest concours in 2001 with my white 530i that was Zainoed. See the detailing forum on Roadfly.org for lots of discussion of Zaion. It looks as good as Zymol without as much application effort. I only find enough time to detail my car about once a year and this stuff lasts almost that long. The first time I applied it took a bit longer since they claim that its not compatible with wax products and Zymol had been on the car previously. You are supposed to wash the car with dishwashing detergent to remove wax prior to using their products. I used their Z1,Z2 and Z18 products and followed their instructions (mostly). I used diluted Meguires carwash solution for claybar lube and when I extensively clayed the car the first time the z18 bar fell apart. On the second application, a year later, I didn't need to clay the car as extensively and had no issues with the Z18 bar. If you use their products in the cold or high humidity, the polish will take a long time to cure. Their ZFX cure additive is supposed to solve this problem, but I didn't want to spend the extra $$. Good stuff, easy to apply and remove, good results. And, It seems as if you can FINALLY order the stuff online. That feature is new since May. Kevin D. McLeaster WB9HMI '95 M3 Arctic Silver

It's a terrific product. I've Zaino'ed the car 4 times since and each time the Carbon black finish takes on a deeper and more lustrous look. Curing time varies with ambient temperature and humidity. Touch up after each wash with Ultra Clean Gloss Enhancer. Also use their clay bars and Show Car Wash. I started using it after a lot of people said great things about it on R*nnlist (is this why my message was kicked back?). As has been said, it goes on and wipes off exceptionally easily and lasts 4-6 months between applications. I'm not a concourse guy, but some who are swear by it as well. I will say that it makes your car VERY easy to wash as nothing sticks to it. Down here in Florida ("Land of Love Bugs") this is very important. I'd heard some express fears at one point that it would pose a problem for body shops as paint might have trouble sticking to it. We just went through a bit of paintwork on our car and I can say this is definitely NOT an issue. Not cheap stuff, but one bottle of the "primer" and "top coat" (Z1 and Z2?) has lasted me for over two years on both cars.
