#2. Proper point to attach dyno straps? - from K Quistorff

Okay, I know this has been discussed before, but for the life of me I can't find anything in the archives. I had a last minute opportunity to dyno my '96 M3 this past weekend on a DynoJet dyno. When I got there, I was informed that the (single) bumper tow hook could not be used for strapping the car down, because two symmetrical points must be used. The tech suggested attaching to the lower rear control arms, which I knew was asking for trouble. He then suggested around the lower mounting location of the shocks, which I wasn't real confident with either. I ended up leaving without attempting a dyno run, figured I better look into it further. So where the heck is a safe place to attach the dyno straps to on an E36 M3? Keith Quistorff 1996 M3

I finally got an opportunity to get my '96 M3 on a set of scales this weekend to get it cornerbalanced. I was surprised the weight was less than I expected - 3120 lb w/quarter tank of gas, no spare, full interior - basically the set-up I run for autocrosses. With my weight in the driver's seat, I got it cross-balanced within about 8-10 lbs. The right rear is considerably lighter than the other 3 corners - no surprise with the low fuel load, sans-spare, and driver weight. I also noticed the sum of front weights is about 80 lbs. more than the sum of rears, which begs a question: Is it better from an autocross standpoint to add weight (i.e.: full tank of gas and/or spare tire in) to achieve 50/50 front/rear weight distribution, or run as I normally do, ~80 lbs lighter in the rear? I am hoping somone in the south bay (San Jose area) either has a stud I can purchase or one I can pick up from an open engine and replace in a few days when BMW can get me one (thursday). The stud is an M7x95 and holds the caps over the camshaft bearings. Thanks, Eric Fesler ph (408) 721-5287

Date: Mon, 8 Sep 2003 22:09:54 -0500 From: "Kris Welhart" <kris.welhart@cyou.com> Subject: front brake calipers Hello, I would like to get a spare set of new/ used/ rebuilt e36 m3 front brake calipers. I followed up to Mike L's suggestion of the auto parts store and Autozone can order them for $42 ea, but I have never heard of the brands, the cheapest was ARI, anyone have any comment or experience with Autozone or similar calipers? As other options, does anyone know of any vendors or individuals that have any rebuilt or used calipers at a reasonable price? Thanks, Kris 95 M3 98 M3 94 325i- for sale

I've never heard of anyone adding weight unless they had to by some regulation. If you can't move weight around, I'd stay with your current plan. Dave

Given the simple process of rebuilding, I cant see much difference between the different companies out there. Basically it is just cleaning, new seals, new boots, reassemble, plus they have equipment to polish the bores and piston that your average shade tree doesn't have. I would think they are fairly careful given the liability of a brake caliper and if it failed due to their workman ship. The rebuilt calipers I bought, even had the M indention, but have heard of others getting them that didn't. The OE supplier does sell new calipers without the M indention on them, so I guess they are in circulation in the US too. I would be interested if anyone has any type of bad story about a bought rebuilt caliper. In my opinion, buying 2 spares to take to the track is very good insurance, as I have had caliper issues at the track before, mostly due to my improper rebuilding techniques, lol, I am sure.
