In my [limited] experience, that's found on racing steering wheels that can be disconnected from the column and the tape provides a quick visual reference to get it lined up easily when putting it back on. Of course, I've seen Sparco seats and harnesses in cars that aren't even autocrossed (they might hit a cone and get DIRTY), so Alex's response of "eye candy" is equally likely. :) - rob > I previously posted this but didn't receive any response, perhaps > because it > > was a holiday weekend, or perhaps because it's a lame question. > Nevertheless, I'm probably over-thinking it, but I guess I'm still > looking for comments. > > Regarding steering wheels with colored strips on the rim at top > center. Holy mother of... I want a "factory" upgrade for my radiator, but at that price I'd rather buy two of my stock 2 row radiators, thanks. I thought they were going for a bit under $300? Anyone buy one for around that? Tell me where! -josh ===== __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Thanks for the replies. I already figured it's use for knowing when the wheels are straight. But I didn't consider removable steering wheels, so thanks for that comment. Interestingly though, the image is a 3-spoke wheel, where the spokes basically look like a "T". And the spoke at 3:00 has a logo on it. Why not just use these as reference points when re-attaching the wheel? Although when time counts, perhaps the yellow strip really helps. I wonder if research was done. Now if the steering wheel was symmetric with 4 spokes and no logo, the advantage of the yellow strip would be more obvious. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Chris- > > I'll assume you're talking about something like this? > > http://www.sparcousa.com/images/133.jpg > > As posted by Jason, it is to let you know when the wheel is straight.. > but (at least to my knowledge) not really for while you're on track, but > when the steering wheel is disconnected from the car. First, they don't have a radiator for the S54 M Coupe/Roadsters yet as the cars are still covered under warranty. He also went on to say that the reason why the E36M3 (and all E36 3 series for that matter) radiator is so cheap (~$145 there) is that the volume of production for that car is sooo high. He's thinking that the OEM version, when it comes out, will be significantly more. Having said that, my wholesale connection can get the S54 radiator for $400...still a big jump from $145. Oh, and at that price, I'd go for the ZionsvilleAutosport one. The S54 M Coupe radiator still has the plastic neck, eh? Well, that just confirms my decision making process...the OEM Behr one is going in this weekend! =) Chester =====

Depends -- I've used it on-track, and even more frequently, on dirt in my M3. In my Pikes Peak video you can see how I have to crank in about 2 turns to get around Brown Bush Corner. It takes too long to unwind the wheel manually, so I simply let go of the wheel and caught it the second time the white tape reached 12 o'clock. Worked like a charm ... -- ______________________________________ Andrew E. Kalman, Ph.D. aek@pumpkininc.com

Jim wrote: >I believe I paid $286, from the shop that did the install (Bavarian >Motorsport in Milpitas, CA). I also got one from Ramon for around that price. But he said it was the last one available. As usual, it came from SSF. BTW, the reasons I decided to upgrade are i) it's 8 years old (though has only 16,000 miles), and ii) the last time I drove at Thunderhill it was reasonably hot (95-100, I think), and my coolant cap "popped" after I came to a stop at the end of the day. Later, I found that the lower 1/4 of the radiator was also obstructed by some dry grass I picked up due to an earlier OTE that day. So I concluded that the current radiator is marginal for how hard I'm pushing the car. Naturally, my temp gauge never moved from center while I was on-track.
