#1. Shifting in cold weather - from Newman, Christopher

Date: Mon, 6 Oct 2003 12:56:17 -0400 From: "Newman, Christopher" <CNewman@LSAC.org> Subject: Shifting in cold weather The outside temperature is starting to get colder now (40 degrees F in the morning). For any manual transmission car, it seems that shifting gears in colder weather is less-smooth until the transmission warms up. Sort of like warming up and stretching before playing sports. On the other hand, in 90 degree summer heat, since the transmission and fluid are already relatively warm, shifting is smooth right from the start. A lot of you mention using different brands of fluid in your transmissions. Do any of these fluids ELIMINATE the less-smooth shifting when cold, or do they just REDUCE it ? Or is less-smooth shifting in cold weather just a given, regardless of the fluid you use ? Thanks for any thoughts.

The 2.8 has smaller bore & stroke than your 3.2, so swapping the 2.8 crank would "shrink" your 3.0 engine's displacement. You would need a crank from the 3.2 if you want to grow your engine. I would have to check, but you may have to change pistons & rods too to make it a real 3.2 (and have the block bored slightly). Just buy a 3.2L shortblock! -- Roger Baker "Bill P" <billpanop@suscom.net> wrote: >I need some info on the engine blocks for the E-36. Here is my scenerio. Date: Mon, 6 Oct 2003 12:30:57 -0500 From: "Kris Welhart" <kris.welhart@cyou.com> Subject: Frost-on-the-Pumpkin Driver School- St. Louis As the days get shorter and the weather turns cooler, it can only mean one thing, the St. Louis BMW Club's annual Frost-on-the-Pumpkin school at Gateway International Raceway. This year's event is November 1st and 2nd with an Instructor tuning day on Halloween, October 31st. Talk about scary! For those of you who don't know, GIR is a ROVAL using an infield road course and turns 3 & 4 of the oval. It's a fun track with great facilities (covered paddock anyone?) and is guaranteed to be a great weekend. It's also a great way to close out the 2003 driving school season. For a track map, check out http://www.gatewayraceway.com/mapOval.html. St. Louis is but a short drive from Chicago, Kansas City, Indianapolis and Memphis with a lot of convenient, clean and inexpensive lodging close to the track. There are a few spaces left so please join us for what will be for many the last event of the year. For more information and an application, check-out www.stlbmwclub.com. Hope to see you there! First off, I'm in Northern California, so our notion of "cold" may be different from yours :-) IME, an appropriate trannsmission fluid will help REDUCE the balky cold-shifting, but won't necessarily eliminate it. Just like with motor oils, some will perform better in cold climates than others, but still will need some time to come up to temperature to flow properly. #5. Stop Tech 332MM kit - initial review - from Shelhart2@aol.com

Date: Mon, 6 Oct 2003 21:09:11 EDT From: Shelhart2@aol.com Subject: Stop Tech 332MM kit - initial review I broke down and bought the 332MM Stop Tech kit from Bimmerworld (no affiliation) last week. They did well on the price and were very easy to deal with. I installed this weekend and had my first day of driving. The kit was simple and straight forward to install. The fit and finish is excellent. It comes with "performance" pads, 2 piece slotted rotors (aluminum hats) and new stainless steel lines. These 4 piston calipers are huge! I had to put a 10mm spacer behind my BBS RC 17X8 rims and I only have about 3-4MM of space between the caliper and rim. The braking is excellent. Very even and very steady. There is a rather dramatic difference between the stock set up. I've got a drivers school at Sebring in January (Winterfest for those interested) and will give the track update soon. Shel Hart 98 M3

Date: Mon, 6 Oct 2003 23:13:30 -0700 From: Reid Conti <reid@conti.net> Subject: Bringing 95 M3 into CA... Howdy.. I'm currently in CA, and looking at selling my 95 Daytona Violet M3 while I'm here.. But it's registered in WA. So I guess I'm wondering what kind of hoops I'll have to jump thru to get it registered for sale here? I don't want to essentially find a buyer and then run into problems getting it registered.. What kind of steps/money am I looking at? I guess I'll have to do smog, which is a tossup -- it's failed in WA before, but I think it's just that the cold start sucks.. once you get it nice and hot it passes with flying colors, so hopefully it will pass here as well. Any other inspection, say by the highway patrol which will complain about my lack of front plate, and my ellipsoids, etc? thanks! - reid

I have a few extra lugs (spares) which I will throw in with the purchase. Since I am not running an aggressive setup anymore, I do not require them. They come with life-time warranty. First $55 takes it. Ahmad

I received a parking ticket in palo alto, in the underground parking at my place of work. I was parked on the crossline straddling 2 Handicap spots. I did not block the spots, merely parked in between them, so to speak. Anyways, the site security called the parking police on me and they in turn, wrote a citation for $300!! I wrote them back, giving them several reasons why I had to park there. 1). Lack of parking space 2). Car cannot be out on the sun at that time since my bumper just got replaced and paint was new....etc... They wrote me back today, and they said that after review, the citation stands. I can request a hearing, but I would have to pay the money upfront. I am disgusted with this, and want to stand up and fight this... My question is: 1). Do I have a leg to stand on? 2). Will I need a lawyer for this? I wont comment about the handicap part, as I don't know exactly what the spots look like and I have a handicapped person in my family which gives one a different perspective, especially when I see people use the handicapped spots for trivial reasons, rain, needed cover for car, etc etc. Generally, the lines are there for the extra space needed to load/unload wheel chairs, wheel chair left etc. Handicapped parking spaces are designed to be large for a reason, with strict codes that builders, property owners etc must follow. I have been on both sides of the fence during the building phase, but tend to agree with the stiff fines and think they should be much stiffer, so any and all would not even remotely consider using one unless needed. As to fighting it, I cannot think of a good reason they would let you off? Can you really think of anything? not being a smart ass, but just discussing the facts. Needing shelter for the bumper cover is important, but I would just respond with "get there earlier' to get a spot.
