What are you waiting for? :-) Do you live somewhere with crappy weather? Otherwise why not use it as a daily driver? Have you driven one of the three euro models that's floating around the dealerships? The car is absolutely amazing. It accelerates faster, handles better and provides more smiles per gallon than anything you've ever driven. AND, it rides better than my stock '95 M3. Robert Puertas

The DMV site has fairly decent info on this... the catch is be careful that you don't run astray of the law regarding the vehicle must be re-registered in CA within 20 days of entering the state. Reid, the '95 M3 just entered the state this past weekend, right? ;) In terms of paying the use tax, you can actually get around that one if you keep a "new to you" used car that you just bought out of state for 90 days. I just went through this recently - I mistakenly thought the period of time was 6 months. The 6mo applies to new cars bought out of state that you're trying to bring in as used. Had I known I only had to wait 90 days, I would have seriously considered it. > If the Washington registration is current, I'd suggest > having the new owner handle the registration. You'll still > need the smog Keep in mind that if this is the Bay Area we're talking about, the Enhanced Smog really sinks its teeth in as of October 1st. The car now requires the full dyno BAR-97 smog test versus the two-speed idle sniffer test. -Jody '02 540i/6

Wes - I'd be talking to JC right quick. I believe that with the elimination of the cat (back pressure) you are now running lean...really lean. I have replaced the battery and the red led is bright, but even holding the remote to my chin or chest results in the door locking only about 10% of the time. IS there something in the car like an antenna that may be loose or something I can check to improve the performance? It won't lock from either side of the car when standing right next to the front fender. Any suggestions? Also, can anyone recommend a good alignment shop in the Austin, Texas area? Thanks, Al

By getting more exhaust gasses out of the combustion chamber, you're able to put more fresh air/fuel mix into the chamber. This increases the cylinder pressure. The increased cylinder pressure needs less ignition advance. So it's no surprise that you're getting detonation now. But of course, this is all just theory :) Nick > Hey all - > I've had the JC Euro HFM Cold Air Intake for about a year on > my 1995 M3 before adding the AA Track pipe (essentially > removes the cat) and now I'm getting pinging under WOT in > 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th gear at approx 3000-4500 RPM. I suspect the systems are similar, but confirm that before you start taking stuff apart. The alarm unit is under the glove compartment. You need to remove the glove compartment to get to it (about ten screws all around the passenger side of the dash, plus one on the inside top of the glove compartment), then take off the big piece of trim underneath to reveal the alarm brain. There's a writeup on Ron Stygar's page. And I think I remember seeing a PDF of the alarm manual on the web somewhere; search the list archives. The alarm module does have an external antenna. I guess it's possible it got knocked loose or broken. Or something else could be loose -- if holding the remote right next to the glove compartment doesn't help, try tightening the connnections to the alarm brain. Again, YMMV if the keyless entry system is very different from the alarm. -- David Ripton dripton@ripton.net

Ladies & Gentleman: I'm *this* close to putting down a deposit for a 2004 Lotus Elise. 190HP in a car under 2000 pounds. Plus the world-reknown Lotus steering. My E36 would remain my daily driver (and be parked on the street), and the Elise would go in the garage, and probably log about 5000-6000 miles a year. Am I completely insane? Is there *any* reason why I shouldn't do it? I'm longing for a really light car, and the harsher ride quality doesn't scare me. However, I *am* initimidated by driving the Elise and sharing the road with know-nothing drivers in SUVs. I'm 6 feet tall, and should fit inside the Elise just fine. Thoughts? I know the folks on this list will have the best advice on the net, so please chime in at will. ************************************************* Please help support the E36M3 list by visiting our sponsors: Taylor Autosport http://www.taylorautosport.com Rogue Engineering http://www.rogueengineering.com BMW M3 Specialties http://www.jt-designs.com Bimmerworld http://www.bimmerworld.com Turner Motorsport http://www.turnermotorsport.com DIGEST INFORMATION: http://www.bmw-m.net/resources/digest_info.htm *************************************************

Date: Tue, 7 Oct 2003 23:39:00 EDT From: LoweSeaton@aol.com Subject: Re: [E36M3] Original BMW coolant - Is it special? Rob, I always recommend (and use) BMW O.E. antifreeze. Yes, I know it costs $20 per gallon. But it is only 1 gallon per flush and you only do it once every 2 years. I figure for $10 per year, I can afford it. BMW specifies a phosphate free antifreeze. I think Preston regular is phosphate free so it meets that requirement. But I suspect there are other additives in the BMW antifreeze too that you want. I suppose Preston is OK but why take a chance for less than $5 per year? Whatever you do, don't use Dexcool type antifreeze. It is incompatible with your current antifreeze.
