I heard the deep rumble as he fired it up and let it settle into an idle, and one of the guys standing near me asked, "wow, what exhaust do you have on there?" The stock exhaust sounds real nice and rumbly after 140,000 miles of driving has packed most of its wadding into uselessness. :) It's a shame it's so bloody heavy. Ironically, I'd probably most be interested in an exhaust system which sounded *like* stock, but saved me 30-40lbs. - Chris

My '95 M3's stock exhaust sounded perfect when I sold it and the whole car to list member Jason L. However, my '96 M3 was always much quieter than the my '95. We put an AA GEN I on the '96 and it was just slightly louder than stock and seemed much lighter. Though, it seems all AA GEN I's tips eventually cracked. So, we got a AA GEN III to replace it and it is noticeably louder than the AA GEN I. All the other aftermarket exhausts for the M3 have been too loud for my ears or have severe resonation problems at certain rpm's. -- Rex Tener rex_tener@yahoo.com

For the most part, all of us are driving street cars with leather (sometimes power) seats, stereo systems (some with subwoofers), air conditioning, etc. Do you honestly think that the exhaust system weight matters? I have a Supersprint on my '95 purely for sound. The build quality is unreal, it sounds good and it probably weighs close to the stock system. -josh --- Chris Papademetrious <chrispy@ieee.org> wrote: > Date: Wed, 05 Nov 2003 12:21:04 -0500 > From: Chris Papademetrious <chrispy@ieee.org> > Subject: RE:: [E36M3] UUC TSE > > I remember once I was at a friend's house with some > BMW buddies, and > someone had gone to get in my car to take it for a > spin. If two units have the same sound and performance gains, and one weighs 10 lbs less, I'll go with that one. Less weight = faster lap times, all other things being equal. Unfortunately, track events are one of the first casualties of said layoff. For the most part, all of us are >driving street cars with leather (sometimes power) >seats, stereo systems (some with subwoofers), air >conditioning, etc. > >Do you honestly think that the exhaust system weight >matters? Of course it does. I notice a significant difference when I drive my car alone, versus when my 115lb buddy is in the car. While 40lbs isn't 115lbs, it's a step in the right direction. Between that, my Dynabatt (30lbs), the flywheel (15lbs + rotational benefits), the BBS RKs (7lbs per corner, plus unsprung AND rotational benefits), and the carbon fiber hood I am contemplating for my eventual front-end repaint (around 30-40lbs IIRC), it will add up. My car is a non-luxury M3 with manual seats and no subs in the trunk. Sure, it's only a street car, but I still have fun in the twisties, and can still scare myself a bit when I choose to. By your street/luxury car logic, why should any of us street car people buy any upgrades at all? Because it's fun! :) And it's sure a lot easier than *me* going on a diet. - Chris
