#1. Radio code no longer works - from Jonathan Evans

Date: Fri, 21 Nov 2003 10:32:23 -0500 From: "Jonathan Evans" <jonathanevans@hotmail.com> Subject: Radio code no longer works Gang, I was going through my monthly chore of resetting the O2 sensor DME fault by removing the battery terminal yesterday when something strange happened. After the "hard reboot" the radio code no longer works to reactivate the radio. I do this every 4-6 weeks. 5 digit number does nothing now. I may have been putting in the wrong number for the first few times. Does the radio remember this and refuse any and all tries for a period of time? I tried rebooting again, but the code still does not work. Is there any buttons that need to pressed besides the 5 digit code? -Jonathan 95 M3 - Nearly 100k!

I picked up a new cap from the dealer last night and I've got it in the car as a spare, but I think the problem is that I have yet to successfully bleed the system. When driving in traffic last night and crusing with the heater cranked up, it would go cool until I had a stretch to accelerate, then the heat would come back in. I'd also get a "Check Coolant Level" when I'd park that would be fine when I started the car up ten minutes later. I'll have to consult the Bentley and figure out what step(s) I missed. Thanks, Steve On Thursday, November 20, 2003, at 02:44 PM, DocWyte wrote: > Steve, > > The caps can fail, but you might have an air bubble in > the system which caused it to overflow... #3. re:Help diagnose "whirring" noise after hard braking - from Jonathan Evans

Date: Fri, 21 Nov 2003 13:24:07 -0500 From: "Jonathan Evans" <jonathanevans@hotmail.com> Subject: re:Help diagnose "whirring" noise after hard braking I had this EXACT problem about 6 months ago. After some serious backwoods driving, the whirring/whooshing noise would come from the front of the engine after heavy braking. Car did not sound very good at all. I drove it straight to my mechanic and we agreed that the noise was coming from the VANOS system. I thought it sounded like the usual VANOS "marble" noise amplified. He replaced it and the noise went away. This may have been one giant coincidence, so proceed with caution. I'm not sure about the euro motor (double VANOS?) playing a part of this. Yes, I believe after 3(?) incorrect attempts at entering the code, it will lock out any future attempts for a period of time. (OK, you made me walk out to the garage to get the radio owner's manual from the trunk :-)) After 3 incorrect entries, the display will say WAIT. You now have to wait for an hour, with power still on, before re-attempting to enter the code. Disconnecting the unit from the power supply will restart the delay period. My guess is that the pump ingests air under heavy braking when the fluid level is low where it takes a minute or two for it to purge. You feel it in the steering as it shudders somewhat when you turn the wheel. Try topping up your fluid level and see if that takes care of it. Greg '95 M3 -------------------- 7 -------------------- Date: Thu, 20 Nov 2003 21:43:43 -0800 (PST) From: John Hovell <jhovell@stanford.edu> Subject: Help diagnose "whirring" noise after hard braking E36'ers -- After hard braking in my '95 M3, I hear a low-pitched whirring/groaning noise coming from under the hood. The vibrations of the noise can be "felt" through the steering wheel (my initial thought was it was the P/S pump dying, though I had my mechanic look at it and he found nothing), and the noise varies pitch with the speed of the engine. It goes away after a minute or two of civilized driving, and would then start again *as* I start braking heavily (although maybe it's just the whirring of the Axxis ultimate pads when cold that is fooling me, but the noise sticks around after I'm done braking and varies with the speed of the engine). Any thoughts what this might be? One more tidbit of info, the engine is an S50B32 (Euro) motor, but everything else (e.g. braking system) is '95 US Spec. The engine was just tuned up by Bill Arnold in Marin County, CA. I'm headed to the track Saturday, and would hate to have to cancel. But obviously that's what I'll have to do if I can't figure out what's wrong, unless I'm reasonably confident the problem is not safety related or urgent. The car stops fine. Any thoughts appreciated... I'm most likely going to be spending most of the afternoon tomorrow tinkering around in the engine bay to see if I can find anything. Best, John

I can easily adjust from street to track settings. In addition to improved handling, they help get even tire wear on the track. I run Toyo RA1's with the 4 degrees negative camber. Savings on tire wear alone are worth the cost of the camber plates. That is... assuming that you track the car. #8. RE: [E36M3] Anyone replace a seatbelt latch for SRS light? - from Jeremy Conners

I would disconnect the battery and spray electrical parts cleaner into the latch. There might just be 'gunk' (nice technical term) in the latch. This may save a few dollars since you can play and reset the code yourself. The latch detects if you are either belted or not and slightly modifies the SRS deployment timing accordingly. JC <SNIP> Well, the peake SRS tool tells me that my driver side seatbelt switch is bad. Reset the code and it came back on with in a day. Looks like the latch has gotta go. Anyone have experience with changing this? I am assuming the whole thing has to go to get the new switch. From the TIS, looks like this beast is tied to a firing device in the seat that takes up slack in the belt when a crash happens. It looks like one piece from the pictures. Any help would be great! --Bill 96 M3 coupe red <SNIP>

#9. RE: [E36M3] Battery and Oil Questions - from Jeremy Conners

Date: Sun, 23 Nov 2003 03:11:56 -0500 From: "Jeremy Conners" <jeremy.conners@comcast.net> Subject: RE: [E36M3] Battery and Oil Questions This will certainly happen due to the hydraulic lifters collapsing prematurely, etc. Also, high performance engines may burn more oil, but might not be noticeable. This is certainly true with S5x engines that spray the piston skirts with oil to help provide cooling (preventing detonation) for the higher compression that is being used. JC <SNIP> 1) I detected a slight ticking noise when the engine was running, and took it to my mechanic for an opinion. He said I was 3 quarts low on oil, with no sign of a leak or of any oil burning. I had the oil changed 5,000 miles prior to this latest examination (by the same mechanic), and the engine has run very well. I had no dashboard indication of low oil, and my temperature gauge has remained steady. In short - no clear signs of unusual oil consumption, no leak detected. Any thoughts on how and why this may have occurred? .... D.J. Long <SNIP>
