#1. Thwock sound ID? - from K.C. Boyce

Date: Tue, 9 Dec 2003 17:17:02 -0500 From: "K.C. Boyce" <kcb@abcgroup-inc.com> Subject: Thwock sound ID? Hallo Gruppe! I've got a thwocking sound (sounds plasticky) coming from the general area of my rear package shelf when I go over bumps. Here's what I've done so far to try and figure out what it is: - Drove over rough pavement one rear wheel at a time. The noise occurs more often when the passenger side goes over rough pavement, but it'll also occur sometimes when the driver's side does. - Examined the top of the package shelf and the mounting points (in trunk) for anything loose. To no avail... Anyone BTDT? The noise doesn't always occur when I encounter bumps, but it definitely is tied to the rear wheels. Does this sound like a typical failure mode for the rear shock mounts? On my E30, I got a much more metallic knocking sound when the RSMs went bad. TIA, KC Boyce '97 M3/4

#2. Low coolant - from Chester Wong

Date: Tue, 9 Dec 2003 14:16:06 -0800 (PST) From: Chester Wong <chester_p_wong@yahoo.com> Subject: Low coolant Hey guys. I replaced my radiator a few months ago as well as performed a flush. I was pretty sure the system was bled fully, but I could be wrong. Anyway, I only really checked the coolant level shortly after I performed the maintenance. I went snowboarding over the weekend and had the AC on (blowing cool air) to keep the windows defogged as well as to cool myself...I had my ski jacket on..hehe. Is it possible to freeze the coolant in the heat exchanger thereby rupturing a line? I ask because the car sat in like 10 degree weather over Saturday night. When I went to fire up the car on Sunday morning, I saw the check coolant message. Rut roh! Also, I added one gallon of BMW antifreeze and as much distillied water as needed to get it to the full line....and I know I used more than 1 gallon of water...more like 1.5 gallons. =/ I checked the coolant at lunch time and sure enough, it was low. I also saw some traces of dried up coolant on the valve cover... What gives? TIA, Chester =====

Then I told him that I learned from the internet that a con artist used the same method to steal people's money. I said I hoped that he was not the one. I even offered him 50% discount on my car's price, if he could pay me the exact amount via a real cashier's check. :o) It has been completely silent from that end since... Make certain you disconnect the negative battery cable and shield it from coming into contact with the battery. Remove the door panel and there are 4-5 bolts holding the airbag unit to the door frame. There is a little connector on the side that you will need to pry off as well. Gaining access to the lock cylinder should be very simple (roll the window all the way up first before disconnecting the battery). Shel 1998 M3

#6. Infamous Steering Hose failure - from Chris Teague

Date: Tue, 9 Dec 2003 19:55:22 -0800 From: "Chris Teague" <cteague@cox.net> Subject: Infamous Steering Hose failure Tonight I saw oil leaking out from under the garage door into the driveway. When I opened the garage, I found a nice puddle under the M3, right under the power steering hose. It's the hose that connects to the metal "trombone" piece on the rack. Searching the archives, it looks like many of you have had the same part fail. I don't see anyway to clamp it, since it looks like a press on fitting where the hose goes to the metal tube. So I need at least one new hose. I see three. Bimmerparts lists 2, but only one in stock, and not the one that is leaking. I have an autox (2 actually) this weekend. I do have some Redline power steering fluid. So off to the dealer I go tommorrow. Question is, do I buy just the hose that is leaking, or all 3? What about this filter thing in the reservoir Jim B. mentions? Any idea how much these hoses/filter run? Thanks in advance for any hints/tips. I do gather it's not a big job. And hey, I do have a new set of front H&R springs that I need to change out anyway, so the car needed to be on jackstands anyway... Chris 97 M3/4

Jeremy was awesome in his business transaction. He communicated everything in a clear and professional manner, and kept you informed of the status of your order. Additionally, he is very experienced with the traction control system. I highly recommend doing business with him. I think he is in the middle of another group by on these currently. The one thing I can tell is that they not getting cheaper over time. And I need one for my wifes 92 525iT e34. I would use any M3 exhaust either 95 or 96+, both fit and the minor differences are fine with me. Anyone sitting have either of these items sitting around and want to make some garage space? I am in the Washington DC area, and would prefer to do a local deal as shipping exhausts just sounds like a bad idea. Cheers, Noah Paci Vienna, VA.

Date: Wed, 10 Dec 2003 08:14:38 -0600 From: "Jamie Howton" <jhowton@fotofab.com> Subject: RE: [E36M3] Infamous Steering Hose failure I replaced all three P/S hoses on my 95 M3 last year. I don't remember how much they were except I think that the cooler line (trombone shaped piece) was expensive. FWIW Porsche 928's have an almost identical P/S setup to E-36 M3s (hoses, pump and reservoir are all the same ZF components), some of the "928 guys" that I have talked to have been able to take all of their P/S hoses to a local hydraulic hose suplier and have the hoses re-built for a nominal fee. I didn't go that route but you might consider it as an option if you can't find the factory parts in time. Regards Jamie Howton 2002 330i 1995 M3

#10. Stiff Clutch Pedal? - from arionatof@comcast.net
Top
Date: Wed, 10 Dec 2003 15:41:21 +0000 From: arionatof@comcast.net Subject: Stiff Clutch Pedal? I am not sure if it is a real problem or not but my clutch pedal became really stiff since above a month ago. I didn't do anything clutch-related and it happened couple days after I installed the Konis in my car. The car drives fine and shifts fine, it is just that the it takes me 3X the effort to depress the pedal. Just want to check to see if anyone has experienced similar problems or not. FWIW, the fluid was replaced about 13K ago (ATE Type 200) and the brake pedal feel is normal. TIA, -Johnny 1998 M3/4 72K
