I need a new set of street tires for my M3 that will also double for rain tires on the track. I'll use dedicated track tires for dry and intermediate conditions, but for heavy standing water, I'm looking for a tire that will move some water at high speeds, be cheap and perform OK on the track. Don't much care about noise, ride quality, etc. But I'd like a tire that moves water OK and doesn't totally suck on the track, but also doesn't cost too much. Tire Rack is selling 235/40/17 712's for $93/each, which is an attractive price. If anybody has any experience with other tires in that price range (say under $100/tire or so) that are good in rain, that would also be appreciated. FWIW, I run a non-staggered 95 setup for the street/rain. Come to think of it, I run a non-staggered setup for all applications, staggered wheels are the spawn of the devil IMHO...... Thanks in advance! Vern Anderson 98 M3 __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New Yahoo! Photos - easier uploading and sharing. http://photos.yahoo.com/

I second that, I was stuck in traffic for a few laps at Nelson Ledges this fall and when it finally cleared, I went flying into turn 1 at a good clip, then realized the traction control was still on. Right when I really, really needed to be steering the car with the throttle in the middle of 4th gear, the car decided I needed a little help. That made for a very exciting moment. I don't think ASC (Acceleration Slip Control, not Automatic Stability Control, isn't it?) was designed with those maneuvers in mind.... I know this because I forgot to turn it off at Pocono this spring and it took my throttle away while diving thru the bowl. Not fun. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New Yahoo! I've hit about 1" of standing water at 65 MPH and didn't feel any hydroplaning. I live in the Santa Cruz mountains where we get about 96+" of rain a season (4-5 months) and I would definitely consider another set for commuting in the rain. I currently have a set of Kumho MXs and have not experienced heavy rain this season, but they are pretty good when new in the rain. They don't seem as good now that I have about 30k miles on them. I couldn't vouch for the 712s on the track, but a friend of mine used a set at a Vegas driving school in the summer with 2 drivers (A and D). He was pretty surprised at how well they held up. He wasn't the slowest in the A group, but certainly not the fastest. His car was 100% stock with 70k miles on the original suspension. Hope that helps. #4. Automatic Stability Control in Snow - from Mo Karamat

At Limerock 2 years ago, my instructor did not turn it off. Whenever he hit the blind uphill turn (don't remember what's it's called), we would feel the car lose power as it became a little unsettled, and then felt the power kick in as the car settled. He thought there was something wrong with my car. After a bit I realized that ASC was on, so I turned it off. Well, the next lap he said that the car did not cutoff the power during the weight transition... hope this helps.. I'm pretty sure Sears sells a 14 mm and 17 mm hex bit. They may not be in the Craftsman section. Sears has started carrying automotive specific tools without the Craftsman name. Ask for the "automotive" section. I think your local autoparts store might have it too. I know Autozone carries it here in Dallas. If you want to spend much more money, Snap-On makes one. I bought mine from The Ultimate Garage http://www.ultimategarage.com/ Good luck! Lowell Seaton '95 M3
