But, > they costs half as much. > What is the difference? They share the same geometry (and appear to be physically identical) between the E30 control arms and the 1995 E36 M3 control arms (not true for 1996+ E36 M3 control arms). But, the E36 M3 has more robust ball joints. I have 1995 E36 M3 control arms on my 1989 325is combined with 96+ E36 M3 control arm bushings...talk about a bastardization :-) Regards, Rich

I would venture a guess that a car with a plastic intake manifold like the M3 would be especially sensitive to a cold day adversely effecting smog emissions. An aluminum or better yet, cast iron intake manifold is going to heat the heck out of the incoming air causing a better burn for emissions purposes. All the more reason to get the engine compartment environment as warm as possible. The JC intake probably doesn't help either (for emissions). mark -----Original Message----- From: Wesley A. Nicolas [mailto:wes@nicolas.org] Sent: Friday, January 23, 2004 8:20 AM To: E36M3 Subject: [E36M3] RE: Failed Emissions....Now What?? Date: Fri, 23 Jan 2004 11:13:28 -0500 (EST) From: "Wesley A. Nicolas" <wes@nicolas.org> Subject: RE: Failed Emissions....Now What?? I wanted to thank all those who gave suggestions on how I should pass emission...it ranged from replace the cat, clean air filter, change plugs, to just get the car really hot. Being a cheapskate, I just drove the car around for 40 minutes and revved the car at 2000 RPM for 20 minutes while I waited in line and it PASSED WITH FLYING COLORS (even with the temp at 19 degress F outside!). I told the attendant to not let up on the gas quickly (could lead to excess HC readings from unburnt fuel) so he said he would just do the test in 2nd gear. I looked at my previous failed test and the attendant shifted gears between the 15 MPH test and the 25 MPH test so that might have been the problem. Just for reference, car is a 1995 M3 with 139,000 miles, O2 sensor is 20K miles old, plugs are 15K miles old, with a clean JC Cold Air Intake. Moral of the story = Just be sure you car is good and hot before doing the emissions test......thanks for everyone's help and comments! I have a 99, will they fit? Does the Dinan application for the 95 utilize the 96+ strut upper spring perch? TIA KIM Burgess

No, they won't fit or they will be a loose fit at the least. The '96+ spring perch is slightly smaller in diameter. The springs you are looking to buy will be too big. You can still use them but you would have to buy '95 spring perches. I'm not sure how much they are but I wouldn't expect them to be too expensive. Lowell Seaton '95 M3 - Dinan/Bilstein

#5. PTG at Daytona/Grand Am - from dhogg

Date: Fri, 23 Jan 2004 22:15:18 -0500 From: "dhogg" <dhogg@suscom.net> Subject: PTG at Daytona/Grand Am PTG will be running the 2-year-old M3 GTR's at Daytona, but with the 3.2 liter six instead of the fire-breathing Motorsport V8. Check it out on SPEED on 1/31 and 2/1. For other races they've developed a stroked 3.4-liter version of the six that gives substantially more torque for corner exit, but not really any more horsepower. The piston speed in the 3.4 approaches that of the F1 motor. Wow. Also, they're running a new, custom Performance Friction front rotor and caliper that are huge and sweeeet. Suzy already has some photos from the NCC PTG open house last weekend posted on www.bmw-m.net <http://www.bmw-m.net/> . Look under "Photos". The season is about to begin!!! Dave Hogg #20 IS

#6. Rear wing for E36 M3 4-door - from Stephen Ayers

Date: Sat, 24 Jan 2004 10:37:26 -0500 From: "Stephen Ayers" <sayer@ayersnet.com> Subject: Rear wing for E36 M3 4-door I've been thinking about getting into BMW Club this year or next and after reading the rules it does appear the MA Shaw adjustable EVO style wings are not allowed. BavAuto has a high style DTM replica wing that should be legal. Their rep on the phone claimed it works on both the 2 and 4-door but seemed clueless on the geometry differences. Can anyone speak to the quality of the BavAuto part and fit for a 4-door? Thanks, -Steve 98 E36 M3 91 E30 M3

#7. help interpret CE code 'Fd' == EVAP shut off valve stuck closed - from alex.fadeev@verizon.com
Top
Date: Sat, 24 Jan 2004 11:26:55 -0600 From: alex.fadeev@verizon.com Subject: help interpret CE code 'Fd' == EVAP shut off valve stuck closed Folks, My wife's '98 328i (E36) has been intermittently throwing the above CE code. I assume the root cause is the valve sitting on the exhaust manifold that bleeds pressure to the secondary air pump, right? The one that is listed for ~$100 at the dealer. I just want to make sure I am buying the right replacement part and that a). the old part (roughly 1 years old, original replaced when the secondary air pump went out last spring) can not be R&R-ed; b). the code is indicating trouble with some other component. If you have any experience with CE code 'Fd' or EVAP shut off valves, please share your wisdom. -- alex f

Date: Sat, 24 Jan 2004 17:44:33 -0500 (EST) From: marc@plante.com Subject: Speakers and Nak changer f/s I have a couple stereo items from my car that I'd like to sell. 1 pair of MB Quart RSB 215 component speakers. 5 1/4 midwoofs, tweeters and crossovers $75 plus shipping. 1 Nakamichi MB-75 CD changer. Bought on Ebay, but never got around to installing. I've decided that I'm more enamored with the B&B Triflow sound than I am serious high fidelity, so I'm stickiong with the stock headunit. NOTE: display is green, not amber, though I doubt it would be hard to change the LED lighting. - $220 plus shipping. I'll bench test before shipping as well as I literally haven't unpacked it except to confirm it was intact when I got it. Everything in place, including carrying case for removable faceplate, remote...all packaging, and I printed a fresh Nak Manual from the site. Marc Plante E36 325i, 218k Vienna, VA

I had this issue on my M3. I replaced the Evap valve that is located in the trunk, under the spare tire. This was part number 16-13-1-184-235. Still got the fault. Turned out to be a clogged charcoal canister (16 13 1 183 509) that was causing the system/software to think the evap valve was stuck closed. Hope that helps, Jim Bassett
