Stock is 88c. Before I did the thermostat, when temperatures dropped below 40 degrees, my car would not maintain operating temperature at highway speeds. After replacing the thermostat with the new 80c version, I have yet to experience any problems. The car warms up very quickly, and maintains its temperature. I think replacing the thermostat will resolve the problem, but I don't think it is due to 80c being too "cold" of a thermostat. I have heard of brand new thermostats being faulty on more than one occasion before. I'd guess that is your problem as well. After you get it out, try the old thermostat in a pot of water on the stove trick. See when it opens. Good luck. My main point is Dave had somehow gotten a thermostat way too cold for his 3.0L M3. He said it is an 80 C thermostat. I replaced my thermostat as preventive maintenance about 3 years ago. I ordered my parts from Zygmunt Motors (bimmerparts.com). I removed my thermostat and compared it to the one from Zygmunt. I noticed that the replacement thermostat was a degree or two hotter than my stock thermostat. That was 3 years ago - don't hold me to it. Maybe the original thermostat was 91 degrees and the replacement was 92. I called Zygmunt to complain but I was told the hotter thermostat had superseded the original. I said "OK" and completed the repair. 3 years later and still no problem. It makes sense to use a hotter thermostat for emissions reasons. The hotter thermostat will make the engine slightly hotter and that will slightly reduce emissions. I'm sure BMW spec'd the hotter thermostat with emissions in mind. Lowell Seaton '95 M3

In the northeast I have driven both cars at zero and below and the car always heats to the very center of the temp gauge every time. You could bake bread in the car with the heater if you wanted to. Did you test the old thermo with boiling water? You could take the new one out and test it but I bet you have some other problem. That is hard to believe knowing that F1 cars run in the 18,000 - 19,000 rpm range. Is this really accurate? Regards, Rich

I'm trying to locate the sending units, but can't locate them. Can anyone send me a good description (or picture) of where the temperature sending units are? Also, is there a way to tell if they are working correctly or not. TIA, Dave

An 80C (176.0 F) thermostat would be 'a high performance' modification, not a stock replacement.

For those who would rather have a ready-made solution, Victory Product Design now offers a version of their socket which is specifically designed to allow passage of the 11mm socket needed to stop the Koni shaft from turning while the main shaft nut is torqued. You can see it at: http://victoryproductdesign.com/tools_main.htm about 2/3 of the way down the page. Right below it is an interesting Koni shock adjustment tool which I wish had been available before I found it necessary to make my own. I'm not associated with VPD other than as a satisfied past customer, and haven't seen these new tools in person, but they certainly seem worth consideration. Neil 96 M3

#10. Of Koni's, bump stops and dust covers ... - from Andrew E. Kalman

Date: Mon, 26 Jan 2004 13:46:15 -0800 From: "Andrew E. Kalman" <aek@pumpkininc.com> Subject: Of Koni's, bump stops and dust covers ... Hi All. So, I was wondering what people are doing for bump stops and dust covers when they upgrade to Koni's ... I recently purchased a set of lightly-used Koni SA's, all externally adjustable (via tckline). The rear shocks have thicker rods than stock, which precludes the use of the stock combination bump stop / dust cover. Do people buy Koni bump stops for these shocks? And which ones? The shock rods measure 15.75mm in diameter, and the bumpstops in the TrueChoice catalog are for 12mm, 14mm or 16-20mm rods. Dunno which one is right for 15.75mm rods .. Also, is there any dust cover solution for these rear shocks? I haven't compared the fronts to the stock fronts -- does anyone know if the stock bump stop and dust cover will work on the Koni's? Thanks, -- ______________________________________ Andrew E. Kalman, Ph.D. aek@pumpkininc.com
