What made you go for the M3 when you already have an S4. What do you think of the two so far? Rob

Yeah, it will be coming back, with a *LOT* more content than last time. I finally found a new machine to host all the movies! I've been keeping up my collection, so there should be a lot of cool stuff, once the site resurfaces :) > What made you go for the M3 when you already have an S4. I needed (well, wanted) a second car - more for the commute than anything else, really - since the S4 gets about 17-18MPG on a good day ;) I've always loved the E36, so I figured this was a good enough excuse as any :) > What do you think of the two so far? My S4 is pretty heavily modified, so power-wise there is really no comparison, but the M3 is no slouch. I mean, we're talking 430 crank HP versus probably around 270-280 (I have the M50 intake manifold and software on my '97) crank HP... (actually I don't know what the real numbers are for this, but it's just a guess). The torque in my S4 is tremendous... upwards of 500ft-lbs at peak, which is low in the RPM range (3500RPM or so). Handling-wise, the *stock* suspension on the M3 is beautiful. I absolutely love it! The ride is not harsh, yet the car handles very well - and predictably. Granted, I have yet to take the M3 to a track event, but just playing around on the street, it's obvious that the stock M3 suspension is leagues ahead of the stock S4 suspension. (Obviously, my S4 has aftermarket coilovers now - and handles really well, but the ride quality is poorer than the M3's) Honestly, the M3 is probably the best "mod" I've done so far for my S4 ;) I've been driving the M3 for the last week, and today I hopped in the S4 and was re-amazed by the power ;) Fun cars - both of them! Thanks for the warm welcome, btw... -Taner

#6. Water Pump (Again?) - from Shane Kleinpeter

Date: Thu, 29 Jan 2004 19:32:11 -0800 (PST) From: Shane Kleinpeter <sak335@yahoo.com> Subject: Water Pump (Again?) Hey everyone, I'm no stranger to E36's but I'm a bit perplexed right now. My '96 got a new water pump, thermostat, housing, etc. at 52k (I looked it up in my log book today), the car has 78k on the clock right now. The car has been giving me the 'low coolant' message lately and there is a squeak coming from the front of the motor that sounds like the pump shaft is going. I just have a hard time believing that the pump isn't going to last more than 26k miles. This one was installed by the dealer when the car was still under warranty after the last one failed catastrophically, but I'm going to have to do this one. Not a big deal since I've changed plenty on the race car, and for students that had them fail at the track. My question is, I guess, what is the average failure life for these pumps? I can't recall water pumps lasting for such a short time on any other car I've dealt with. Shane K. '96 M3 '94 325i #335JP/ITS __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Aren't you somewhere in the Northeast with the absolutely frigid temps? Is this the first winter your water pump/thermostat/coolant setup has faced since it was replaced? I changed my setup in the Fall and all was fine. When the weather took a turn for the cold, I got a low coolant warning. I had to dump in about a quart of water (maybe a little less) to bring it to the full cold line. That was 2 months ago and I just checked a few nights ago and it was still full at cold. I'm guessing there was some air that didn't fully bleed out until I used the heater extensively. As for the squeaking, I get that too and I'm attributing it to the absolutely cold weather. I did not (yet?) get a CHECK ENGINE, but the following fault code existed on checking the system today: 'PRE-CAT OXYGEN SENSOR SWITCHING TIME .. CYLINDERS 1 - 3' 1. Would this explain the very slight roughness I am feeling just at the margin between accel and deccel?? 2. Would this have been buggered up when I ran out of fuel and did throw a CHECK ENGINE with codes indicating misfires in cylinders 1,2, and 3?? 3. Will it recover?? Thanks, Doug

I recall someone posted here recently about this stuff he applied to his wheels and went tracking and even drove in the rain and stuff...and all that was required to clean the wheels was some soap and a sponge. What was it? Chester =====
