Date: Sat, 31 Jan 2004 08:18:14 -0500 From: "dhogg" <dhogg@suscom.net> Subject: FS: Brake Pads, Etc. Off-season changes on the track car and spousal pressure have yielded some sale parts (all prices include shipping): Performance Friction PF97 front/rear (0394.97.20.44/0396.97.17.44) pad set, plus one extra rear pair. All new in box. $125/pair. UUC Tranny mounts (black bushings). Used only 3,000 miles on my street car. These introduce slightly more NVH than stock but keep the tranny rock steady. They just gave me a little more noise than I wanted for the daily driver with a LTW flywheel. $25. Stygar adjustable clutch stop. Like new. $15. JTD Rear Shock Mounts used about 20,000 miles, with either blue or black bushings and a new replacement bushing set. $75. Turner E36 front subframe reinforcement kit. Never installed. $35. Two Michelin Pilot SX MXX3 245/40-17 tires with 1/8" tread (enough to pass inspection - not down to the wear bars). Come get them - York, PA. No reasonable offer refused (I like Coors or Yuengling Lager, or a good Merlot is always nice.) Dave Hogg #20 IS '95 M3 '98 M3/4 Daily Driver

My car usually sits in the garage through the winter months being driven maybe a couple times. Has anyone used or recommend the use of these things so that tires dont flatspot? #6. VANOS: questions & special tools - from ajoseph1981@earthlink.net
Top
Date: Sat, 31 Jan 2004 11:07:08 -0600 (GMT-06:00) From: ajoseph1981@earthlink.net Subject: VANOS: questions & special tools Gruppe: I am seeking advice from those who have tackled the VANOS replacement to get rid of the box of marbles syndrome. Mine is a 4/94 production...this is prior to 3/95 when there were some little changes made in this area. I know I need the fixtures to lock the cams at #1TDC and the dowel pin to lock the lower at #1TDC, also. Do I need the VANOS turning tool? According to Bentley, I do not...would like to know from someone that has BTDT. The earlier VANOS unit (or the intake cam?) has a little nub on it that the VANOS turning tool comes up against to give some guide as to how far the cam shaft should turn when the VANOS is being offered up to it (all this according to Bentley). Which brings up this: Does the later VANOS unit have improvements made to it, and is it compatible with the pre-3/95 engines? I do know the later VANOS solenoids have a different pigtail coming off them. I have also located the dummy lower chain tensioner, and locks for the upper chain tensioner. I plan on replacing both tensioners, the upper secondary sprockets and chain, the VANOS unit, the splined adapter between the VANOS and intake cam, necessary gaskets and seals. Is there anything else that I need to replace? Again, are the post-3/95 parts improved and compatible? I have thought about doing the lifters, but OY VEY! I could be well on my way to an exchange head for what 24 of those little suckers cost. Are there specs for measuring wear on the lifters so as to replace just the necessary ones? Is it better to do all the lifters if they are going to be done? I do plan on updating to the 96+ valve springs and retainers. Victory Product Designs' valve spring compressor looks like it should make that task easier. I should be able to hold the valves in place with compressed air while I change out the springs and keepers. How much pressure here...30 psi enough? More? Suggestions on a better technique? I want to have all my parts and tools together to attack this once winter loosens its grip a little (read: I don't want to freeze fingers off, now). Thanks for all your excellent help with various projects in the past. I am hoping to finally conquer this problem as two well respected independents and a dealer have yet to do it. I figure I can't do much worse. Respectfully, Andrew Joseph ajoseph1981@earthlink.net

Finally cooked the head, had the head milled and a new gasket put on ($2300). Now at 57k miles, 14 mo. later, car is drinking antifreeze and the oil is milky (no track time this time). What do you guys think? Seems a little short on head gasket durability.

#10. s50 intake manifold loses low end? I don't think so - from Chris Conner

It is a 99 with ecis intake, s50 manifold, ert UDP and AA software. I don't see any big low-end torque losses here, although I don't have a baseline run. I'm very happy with the results. I wonder how much power my safety-wired oil pump nut added. http://m3.digital7.com/m3dyno.jpg Chris
