These really are killer pads and that is why I rant about them so much. We get to test new pads every year and most brands come with the same race deal we currently enjoy - even if not, I will pay for something that works better. I still have some Pagids to test in the spring, but so far, I haven't gotten anything to work better than the HT Hawk compounds. Blues are old technology. They are still a great pad and a lot of people like them still - a lot more buy them because it is a big name. But if you are comparing anything to Blues and think the Blues fall short, you really should step up to HT-10 or HT-14. Brake pads are a balance and there are generally tradeoffs. Do you want less noise, less dust, and long pad and rotor wear or killer initial bite, maximum heat tolerance, and a lot of torque? You usually give away some niceties for performance - kind of like the traction circle if you had a grid of properties. As technology gets better, the "brake pad characteristic circle" can expand. Hawk Blue has excellent bite and good torque, but is harder to modulate, the dust is nasty, and cold rotor wear is high (fine on track-temp rotors). The new technology of the HT-14 gives similar initial bite, much higher torque, better wear, no nasty dust, very easy to modulate, and can take about 400 more degrees of temp. Oh, and cost is probably on the circle somewhere. But, if you compare the cost per day of blues with the cost per day of the longer wearing HT-10, you are probably even but still keep all the other good stuff. HT-14/HT-10 is very similar to the Blue/Black setup that Mike mentioned, just better materials. There are some other pads out there that can duplicate the HT-10 on many fronts, but fall pretty far short on others. Try a HT-10 and there is not a single PF pad that can match it and still be easy to modulate if you are trail braking hard and really need a smooth release - I am not picking on them but since there are no list sponsors that sell them, it makes a good example. My .02, someone else can probably add more, and I promise I don't have time for more brake pad dissertations until after we are through our first race of the year. This has been the most durable tire I've learned from all of you who responded to my questions. Any other tires that lasted longer than 30K miles? I would buy them in a flash as long as they are comfortable and quiet. I don't race my M3, so handling can be second priority. I live in the Bay Area, so I don't worry about snow and wet weather. Here are some tires recommended by some of you as durable (most of you did not mention the mileage though - could you tell me the mileage on the tires?): Bridgestone RE750 and RE730 (good prices) Yokohama AVS ES100 (vague steering response) Kumho MX (noisy) Pirelli P7000 SuperSport (noisy and lasted about 20K miles) Continential ContiSportContact (comfortable, but durable? Mileage?) David ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Chester Wong wrote: I don't understand how some people can go thru tires so quickly. I had 235/40 S03 on all four 8.5" wide wheels last year and I put 30k miles on them and they still have plenty of tread left....and I drove like I stole it! Well, maybe you guys are peeling out and stuff, but I know I scrub those tires on turns. I must be doing something wrong! #5. ES100 wear - from Brad Ahrens

Date: Thu, 12 Feb 2004 07:04:13 -0800 (PST) From: Brad Ahrens <txsaggie97@yahoo.com> Subject: ES100 wear >> Or, if you want to stick with summer/performance >>tires, what about >> the Yokohama AVS ES100 ? >They suck. And don't wear out. Tell that to my 225/40/18 ES100s. I was unpleasantly surprised to find them wearing no better than the Kumho MXs I got 13-14k miles out of (and much better grip). Rotated the rears to the front at under 6k and they were well on their way to the wear bars! Which means: a) I am extremely hard on tires...I take some credit here as I like to get on throttle through corners but honestly I don't think I am that bad. b) need to re-check that alighnment. Tires are wearing evenly but maybe I am getting some unexpected toe from those RTABs I need to replace (85k miles...yeah I know...) Also running -2 in back which I need to tone down next alighnment I guess. c) the grip they are lacking are causing them to slide and wear at a quicker rate when I do get on them. Haven't had them let go on me but they do progressively slip now and again. In summary I'll again be trying something new again the next time I buy tires - all to soon... __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I asked this question to Redline, since Redline has ATF, D4 ATF, and Power Steering fluid. The Redline response was that all 3 Redline fluids should work fine in the E36 power steering. But he would recommend the D4 ATF as the best choice. So according to Redline, you should be OK with Redline Power Steering fluid. I do have the exact words at home if anyone is intersted.
