Date: Fri, 12 Mar 2004 11:55:52 -0800 From: John Hoffner <jhoffner@gcfinc.com> Subject: Indicator lights On an E36 how does the service indicator lights work? Is it as simple as tracking mileage and then the indicator lights click off at specified intervals? Or does the computer audit more than that? If a simple mileage calculation is the factor what are the intervals between the stages? In other words if the last bar is lit are there 500... miles to go until recommended service? John

I was interested myself and dug up this link from 1997. http://staff.connect.com.au/lheather/318ti/1997-05/msg00411.html My opinion: I would think the fuel consumption method referred to in the post would be a decent model. More fuel used, harder driving environment whether that "hard" driving is stop/start or high speed. If you are getting good mileage, then you are most probably driving the car gently. If you have the time, and you enjoy making stuff like this, its easy. I bought the gauges and senders at www.egauges.com, no affiliation, just a customer. I also designed my own oil distribution block as well, CNC'd out of aluminum, for the senders. I have about 10 made up, so if your interested, send me an email. I'm trying to sell them for 45 dollars with the special bolt and crush washers. Here are a few pictures of the ODB: http://lynx.dac.neu.edu/j/jechambe/CNC-ODB/PIC1.JPG http://lynx.dac.neu.edu/j/jechambe/CNC-ODB/PIC2.JPG http://lynx.dac.neu.edu/j/jechambe/CNC-ODB/PIC9.JPG Thanks! What is the best source besides BMP or is that it? Anyone > have one to sell? Did anyone make one on their own? Easily the best place that I know of is: http://www.easternmotorwerks.com for two reasons: 1) They supply a wiring harness. Sure, it's not all that hard to make your own, but it's tedious and time consuming. 2) They supply an 80 psi full scale gauge, which is the one you want for our engines, where the oil pressure is regulated to about 59 psi. BMP furnishes a 150 psi gauge, which is completely pointless. Trust me, I did it the hard way, making my own harness and having to sell the 150 psi gauge and buy the 80 psi after the fact.
