One way is to jack up the car and make sure it's securely supported. Get a good grip on opposite sides of the tire and try to wiggle it back and forth. There should be no play at all. There is a BMW mount, used with the BMW extinguisher, that mounts directly under the front part of the drivers seat. I've had one in my car for several years now (gee, anyone know the life-span of the factory extinguisher?). The bracket p/n is: 72 60 9 400 643 - for electric or sport seats 72 60 9 413 436 - not noted, but assume for manual, non-sport seats Fire extinguisher: 72 60 0 000 335 I can take pix of it installed in the car, if you wish. It's not in the way at all. Hope that helps, Jim Bassett ---- Hardware Engineer for hire http://www.jimbassett.com/Resume1.htm

Robert, I have had a spark plug fail on me and the symptoms are exactly as you described. I didn't think spark plugs would ever suffer catastrophic failure before this. I had thought that they would only degrade over time as little bits of them are vaporized in the combustion chamber, so I chased this problem for quite a while (having just changed the plugs so how could they be bad, right?) Anyway, it was with a set of Bosch Platinum's I had just put in my Datsun 510 (remember those?). I changed plug wires, checked the torque on each plug (as Neil said a loose plug can cause similar symptoms by having a poor ground), I even pulled the valve cover to see if I broke a valve spring (that has happened to me as well, BTW). Using proper troubleshooting technique, I put everything (including the old plugs) back the way it was before the trouble started. Amazingly, the problem went away. The Bosch plugs found their way to the trash at high velocity and were replaced with NGK's which I have used religiously right up until I bought the M3. We'll see how that goes... #7. Speaking of Steering Racks... - from Mel Silva

Date: Wed, 17 Mar 2004 13:16:51 -0600 From: "Mel Silva" <melsilva@mindspring.com> Subject: Speaking of Steering Racks... I had an esoteric question about steering racks and lowered M3's. For those not interested, sorry for the interruption. I was skimming through some old documents I had written and I noticed with most other cars I have ever had the 'need to muck with' if you lower or raise the suspension much at all you change the bump-steer angle of the steering rack (since the two no longer travel in the same arc, blah, blah, blah). I have never heard this issue discussed regarding the M3, yet several folks on this list alone are running fully adjustable suspensions or aftermarket springs of some variety. Are 'we' immune to the evils of bump-steer, or do we knowingly ignore it? For both the Mustang and the 911 there are eccentric steering rack bushings to attempt to cope with this issue by allowing you to change the height of the rack. Anyone? Bueller?.... Mel

I'm replacing mine at 80K miles because they're corroded enough to make alignment awkward. However I do have very slight looseness around the straight ahead steering position which I hope the new ones will fix while I'm at it. With your much higher miles I'd be surprised if yours aren't somewhat worn. That and the "replace the cheaper stuff first" priciple. Neil 96 M3
