#2. Check Brake Light Circuit fault - from Steve Sharp

Date: Thu, 18 Mar 2004 16:25:33 -0800 From: Steve Sharp <Steven.Sharp@xilinx.com> Subject: Check Brake Light Circuit fault I think I've seen this posted before, but I need some help. I'm getting in intermittant "Check Brake Light Circuit" on my OBC display. When I've checked the brake lights (like after I close the garage door), they appear to be working fine. This comes and goes, sometimes going several weeks without re-appearing. Is this a common problem? Any thoughts on remedies? Thanks, Steve Sharp Los Gatos, CA '97 M3/2

#5. RE: SRS problem - from geoff atkinson

Date: Thu, 18 Mar 2004 22:15:30 -0500 From: "geoff atkinson" <pskalc@hotmail.com> Subject: RE: SRS problem Speaking of the SRS light and the occupancy sensor... I'm getting the fault code from that part, causing the SRS light to stay on for a couple of minutes after I start the car. My car is a '95, too. So, what's the "approved method" of reparing this, and/or what would the part number be for this sensor? Thanks. -Geoff Atkinson >According to the wiring diagrams in Bentley there should be a passenger >seat >occupancy detector for both the 95 and later cars. #7. Checking Back in on Electrical Problems - from Shane Kleinpeter
Top
Date: Thu, 18 Mar 2004 20:07:14 -0800 (PST) From: Shane Kleinpeter <sak335@yahoo.com> Subject: Checking Back in on Electrical Problems A few weeks back I wrote in asking about electrical problems. I was experiencing a strange thing with my instrument cluster, with different lights lighting up and going nuts. Finally the car died and I had it taken home. The battery was old, so I bought a new one, only to see it die as well. I got into diagnosis mode and tested the alternator. It was only putting out 11.8 volts through the large red wire on the back meaning that there was no way it was going to charge the battery. It should read over 14V. So I pulled the alternator and checked it out. Nothing looked too bad, the brushes were right at 5mm (minimum spec). I didn't have any way to test the individual components so I brought it to Autozone, where they ran a test on it for free. It was putting out the right amps, but not enough voltage. They didn't have a voltage regulator, nor did anybody else. I went to the dealer (Hendrick in Charlotte) and they didn't either but ordered one for me. List price on this was $100, but it was only $60 with the CCA discount. For those of you wondering why people in Charlotte bitch about Hendrick now you know why. They simply gouge the average walk-up customer that pays retail. Anyway, I installed it tonight (incidentally this is a Valeo alternator, not Bosch) and installed the alternator back in the car. Wrestling the alternator back in place was a real pain, the tolerance is very close. Once I had the wires hooked up and the belt on I started the car and got 14.22 volts at the back of the alternator and at the battery. Looks like the problem is solved. Hope this helps somebody. Don't just assume the battery is going bad. Testing the alternator output is as simple as putting a DMM on the wire on the back and could save you the $100 for a new Interstate. #8. Hold the Sunroof Please - from Kevin Bishop

Date: Thu, 18 Mar 2004 22:55:04 -0600 From: Kevin Bishop <kbishop371@comcast.net> Subject: Hold the Sunroof Please With my helmet on in my M3/4 my head is in constant contact with the roof. By the end of my last track weekend my neck was very sore. I've thought about putting in a different seat but then I thought, "Why not raise the roof?" Would anybody dare to guess how uncommon E36 M3's without sunroofs are? Come to think of it, do LTW M3s have sunroofs? I believe that I have seen exactly two non-LTW cars without them. One was a fully prepped race car and the other was a street car for sale but destined to be a track car. Anyway, I'm curious to hear from other what you've seen or heard. Maybe I'll get lucky and find one for sale someday... Kevin Bishop

My 97 M3/4 is a no sunroof car. Also no cruise control either. There were no options of any kind listed on the windows sticker, so I don't even have fold down rear seats. It was a dealer demo car when I bought it. And yes, I do like the extra head room. #10. M3 stuff FS: ACS SSK, KMACs, GC endlinks, RD rear sway, JTD tranny brace - from Msebmwman@aol.com
Top
Date: Fri, 19 Mar 2004 02:55:23 EST From: Msebmwman@aol.com Subject: M3 stuff FS: ACS SSK, KMACs, GC endlinks, RD rear sway, JTD tranny brace All; It is time to clean out the garage again after my recent movement of the M3 LTW back to near-stock status in preparation for sale. So, the following 6 items have come off of my 95 M3/LTW at some point as described below and are available. Please research whether these fit on your E36M3 as there are some minor differences between MY 95 cars and M 9+ cars. All items will be shipped UPS ground from 91406. I do have digital pics that I can send to enquirers. Please don't hesitate to ask for pics so that you know what you are getting. Paypal is the preferred mode of payment if possible: 1. KMAC camber plates. Used for approximately 5 years and 12,000 miles on an E36M3 Lightweight that has the Motorsport STB. Car was mostly garaged. When not garaged it was driven to/from a few track events or up in the hills in LA. Not a daily driver. 290$ new at TurnerMotorsport.com Mine are 120$ plus shipping. 2. JTD transmission brace. This is a powder-coated red steel replacement for the stock cast aluminum part and bushings on the 5-speed E36 M3. Comes with the firm black "track" bushings. JTD may have additional softer street bushings available if you call. This will make your arse feel like it is directly attached to the drive train while it brings additional driveline and engine noise and vibration into your stickshift and interior of your car! This will help keep your transmission from moving under high-torque situations even more than the BMW transmission mount with the 320i bushings or with the full UUC setup. See additional description and installation instructions at jt-designs.com where it is also 315$. Mine has been on an E36M3 LTW for 5 years 12000 miles and has a little bit of the red paint crinkling. LTW is back to stock mount and bushings and so this tranny mount has to go. Mine is 140$ plus shipping. 3. Racing Dynamics rear solid 22 mm adjustable sway bar and 2 sets of bushings. This sway bar has been powder coated black because I dislike the RD Sport green color and wanted something more stealthy. This bar has 2 holes at each end and therefore is adjustable in 3 ways. The RD Sport adjustable sway bar endlinks are included. 2 sets of poly bushings in blue color, one set with about 12K miles on them and the new set with about 5K miles. The bar has ridges where the bushings mount, and, the bushings have ridges on the inside as well all in order to retain grease. I'm getting rid of it because I went bigger with a 24 mm UUC bar. This rear bar is perfect for the beginning track/autox enthusiast who wants a little more sway bar in the rear than stock and also wants to adjust while maintaining the stock front sway bar as is. Mine is 125$ plus shipping. 4. Stock BMW tranny brace with 320i tranny mount bushings. If you want to firm up your tranny mount a little then this is usually the first step. But, to accomplish this you have to drill out the holes on your stock M3 tranny brace to accommodate the slightly larger 320i bushing stud. Well, this tranny mount has the holes already drilled to fit and has the 320i bushings with it. Came off a 5 speed M3 after a couple of years and was used prior to the JTD tranny brace that went on it. So, if you want to try stiffer but don't want to sacrifice your current tranny brace and bushings then this is the way to do it. See UUCMotorwerks.com, under BMW products, tranny bushings/enforcer for some information regarding bushings, deflection and the like. Per UUC, the 320i bushings deflect 24% less than the stock tranny bushing. Don't know what this combination would retail for. Mine is 50$ plus shipping. 5. AC Schnitzer short shift kit model 25113610. This is for 5 speed cars and is the one that goes for big $$. This comes with the ACS CNC machined shifter carrier that replaces the stock BMW cast aluminum carrier, I have added a new plastic "cup" in which the ball rotates, it also has delrin bushings from UUC at the carrier mount as well as the stock BMW rubber bushing available, and it comes with the ACS shift knob that includes the embedded racing helmet with "short shift" engraved around the helmet. This shifter spent 5 glorious years and about 12K miles in an M3 LTW at my fingertips. You can find a description on the hmsmotorsport.com site where it is listed for 794$. Please ask for the pics so that you know what you are getting. I would like to get 230$ plus shipping. 6. 2 Ground Control front swaybar adjustable endlinks with all mounting hardware. The central adjusting "shaft" is anodized red and has "Ground Control" in gold tape stuck on it. There are a few scrapes and scratches and GC tape is peeling off. These were only used for a few thousand miles before a different setup was put on the car. You can see these at ground-control.com and along the upper edge of the page click on bmw without choosing from the drop down box; 99$ for both at GC. Mine is 50$ plus shipping. Thanks very much!! Regards, Marc 95M3 hellrot/schwarz
