#3. Rebuild 3.0 head - from Dave Spragg
Top
Date: Fri, 26 Mar 2004 12:37:54 -0500 From: "Dave Spragg" <davelist@spragg.com> Subject: Rebuild 3.0 head Right... Thanks all for the info on part umber lookups and prices, I think I am all set or nearly so now. The bad news is the following list costs nearly $900 but the good news is that I don't think I have many bent valves from the minor over-rev and those that are mostly likely intake valves which are cheaper than exhaust by a lot. Included in the cost above: - Spring pocket or cups for the bottom of the springs - Upper plates - Keepers - Head bolt set ($20.. And I was going to buy ARP studs? Maybe I still should since breaking head bolts scares me during the reinstall of the head?) - Head gasket set, all seals for valve job as well - lifters In addition will need at least 2 intake valves and maybe more and some valve guides... I can't remember if Will Turner told me to replace all the valve guides. If I need to do that I need to figure out how to heat the whole head up as that is part of the procedure to remove the guides and install the new guides. That actually sounds harder than much of the rest of it but it makes sense that valves guides are a wear item. On top of that Turner recommends (and it would be sweet to have) his high performance spring kit which has springs and retainers top and bottom for those springs) to protect against over-rev and help high rpm running which would replace lots of the parts above but is $800 or so all by itself. They use them in those crazy 325s. Cripes though... That is a lot of cash (much of which is gasket sets and such) without any labor. I am finding out why Will said to buy a 3.2 and be done with it. :) Dave Spragg dave@spragg.com 99 M3 street ( sold :( ) 92 318is #330 IP (95 M3 engine and suspension) 03 Toyota Tundra

That actually sounds harder than much of the rest of it but if you disassemble everything (remove cams mostly) having the valve/valve seats machined and new valve guides installed is pretty cheap. i was asking a local machine shop about my 2002 motor and they said $240 if i bring a complete head and they return a complete head. 160 if i give them head w/o cams and they return complete head. 80 if i give head w/o cams and they do valve guides and seats and return w/o cams. ok, a 2002 motor is a very simple beast by comparison, but hopefully the cheap ratio is maintained for m3 head. jason

That is a lot of cash (much of which is gasket sets and >such) without any labor. That really isn't that bad - each time I've had to re-do the head on the race car (twice), cost was ~$3000 w/labor. First time it needed all 12 exhaust valves (we did all 24 since we were there), and this recent time we replaced all the lifters ($480) and and oil pump (~$200); and I only spent $1000 in labor. >I am finding out why Will said to buy a 3.2 and be >done with it. :) I know the feeling, sigh. Add in the bottom end rebuild from the previous Las Vegas race, and I've probably got the most expensive non-worked M50 race motor out there :-( And oddly, I had gotten the 325is partly due to the motors being more "bullet-proof" than the S14 I was co-driving. Now to continue to impress with my cluelessness in this area... Where does one look up part numbers? I need valves, valve guides, springs, and such for a US 3.0 engine. You know... Stuff to fix what I hope is minor money-shift damage from a 7600-7800 rpm range hit. Dave
