They aren't as sticky as Pilot Sports or S03s, but you can't have both. The P7000 tires have more grip but will wear faster. I've used several styles of Pirellis and have always been happy with them. Many complain of noise, but I haven't had this problem. Except, on a used pair I bought that had some unusual wear patterns. Keep your wheels balanced properly, your alignment up to spec, rotate (if possible) and check pressures regularly and you'll get great wear. I had over 20K on my last set of P7000SS when I sold them. Seems like they had 4-5/32nds left. I've also heard of some good deals on the P-Zero Nero recently. When I did this (boy . . . that hurt to say) the M3 ran fine until I slowed it down. It would not start again and we did the Peake tool engine search and there were multiple messages telling me it was a money shift. Actually, I was going from 3rd into 4th and the stick kicked back out (too fast on the clutch?). I did hear that high pitch - as did most others at Putnam Park last year. Use the Peake tool and get an idea. You might be lucky! Fresh off an engine rebuild, the track car is pulling like a bull, probably better than ever. Like a nice-guy idiot, I let my COO's husband drive the car today on the street. He took 4th to about 5K, then hit 3rd instead of 5th. He caught it and didn't let the clutch out the whole way, but it sounded higher than 7K to me. How do I know if he ruined this beautiful rebuild? What should I do? Dave Hogg

Date: Sun, 4 Apr 2004 08:26:57 -0700 From: "Lew Becker" <lmbeckercfls@earthlink.net> Subject: Re: [E36M3] broke my gas flap locker... I just encountered this same situation hardwiring in my IPOD: There's nothing to "re-set" per se. A small black plastic rod (~2" long, with 3/4 of a hollow cylinder on 1 end) "clips" onto a metal pin that protrudes from the actuator (a small metal box, on the inside of the fender); the rod slips in and out of the black rubber grommet that you see on the left side of the square recess in which the gas cap resides. There's an emergency release collar around the rod attached by a thin plastic line to a black plastic cap in the trunk liner. The collar pulls the rod off the actuator pin when the liner is pulled back by design to allow access to the gas cap if the actuator fails. Just locate the rod (its almost certainly in the trunk -- it may have fallen into the battery compartment) and clip it back onto the actuator pin (after threading it through the rubber grommet). Small hands and manual dexterity help; but, patience is the key, because you're working by feel in a cramped space. It may help to pull the actuator (just loosen the 2 screws that secure it, and slide the actuator over to the right to unfasten it from the mounting bracket) and look to see how the rod clips on. You can easily clip the rod on when the actuator's out; but, I suspect you'll have to put the actuator back, and then clip the rod on by feel. (I left the emergency release collar off, so I didn't have to do this every time I pulled the liner -- its easy enough to disengage the rod manually, if the actuator fails). You need to "reset" the emergency release. I haven't done this in a while, but follow the cord to the actuator. IIRC, the cord is attached to a pivoting rod. You need to return the rod to the "normal" position. Sorry, I can't recall the actual mechanics on how to do this. Maybe someone else can. But play around with it, you should be able to figure out how to reset it; I know I did, once :-) Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 1993 325is #44 JP/A5

The radio outputs to the amplifier in the trunk (underneath driver's trunk liner). There are two harnessess that connect to the amp, and they both have wires that go in and out (don't ask me why, you'd think one harness in, and one harness out, but no). The wires are either for power, input, or output to the speakers. From reading ice-link's website, and viewing this pdf: http://icelink.densionusa.com/ICE-ABMS005.pdf It seems that all you have to do is connect the Ipod into the cd changer wires in the trunk. I guess you could extend the wires that go to the ipod itself, so you can get the ipod into the cabin. I think the other suggestion on this list was to put it in the center console. I'd go with this, too. Well, hope that helps. Well, I guess I'll stick up for the Michelin Pilot Sports :-) But remember, I'm the weirdo who gets nearly 40,000 miles from a set, so YMMV :-) I'm on my second set and I like them. The previous set was SO-3s, which I liked, but compared to the Michelins they have a stiffer sidewall which leads to a bit rougher ride. They are just fine in the dry and in what passes for rain here in Nor Cal. The softer sidewall compared to the SO-3s is fine for daily driving duty. Since I tend to get good mileage out of them, the price premium for them over other tires isn't that big of a deal for me. My 2 cents, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 1993 325is #44 JP/A5

Wait, are you saying there's a street tire better in the wet than the S03? What is it? I've never driven hard with them, but I was a passenger in an e46 m3 shod with them on the track in monsoon-like rain, and the grip was absolutely astounding. By the way, does anyone know where to buy the S03s for a reasonable price online (or maybe in the DC area)? Tirerack has them, but I'm experiencing major sticker shock at $199 before shipping for the 235/40-17. Zach

Guys, It looks like my head gasket is leaking coolant just above the rear most exhaust going into the manifold. I cannot see that it is coming from anywhere else when looking from below. Anyone know what kind of cost is involved? What else should I consider doing when this work is done? It is a 95 M3 with 135K on it. I have already done the vanos, tensioners, chains, etc. I have noticed that my coolant has been going down more than usual (about .5 inches per night). The leak is rather small right now, but should I even drive?!! Thanks. Gary

Date: Sun, 4 Apr 2004 23:22:05 -0400 From: "Kyle J Mathews" <mathewsk@wam.umd.edu> Subject: Member whereabouts On the 3/20 a friend of mine made a post on this digest looking for someone to rent me the vanos/cam tools for the E36. Chester Wong responded saying he had the tools for rent. I sent him an e-mail two days later with my contact information and received a call that day from him. After talking with him for 10 minuets, good conversation, he said just to send him an e-mail with my address and he would ship them out, then when I am done using the tools, send them back with $50 inside, so I think WOW this guy sounds like a normal nice guy. After assembling my car to the point where I needed the tools, I sent him an e-mail with my address on 3/29. The e-mail said that if the tools get to me by Thursday 4/1 I could use them and have them shipped back out that same day, I also said that I was going out of town for the weekend, so if they got to my house on Friday, I would not be able to use them until Monday, and then would return them by Wednesday. After not getting response within 48 hours I sent him an e-mail on Wednesday 4/31 saying, hey did you get my e-mail, please let me know what is up? Well its been a week with no response from Chester and no tools. I don't know what to do, I did not save his phone number when he called me, so I cant call him back, and he has made no post on the digest either. My car is waiting to run again and I have no clue what is going on. Let me know what you guys think.

No, that is not where I was going w/ that - the S-03 rocks... I sh1t thru several sets before wandering in search of savings but... there are significantly less expensive alternatives that don't seem to be any less qualified excepting they don't demand a "brand" premium.

Yes, Jeremy posted to the list asking for help (3/20). I replied to Jeremy stating that I had the tools and could help (3/20). There was a delay in hearing anything from Mr. Matthews and I thought that he completed his project by some other means. I then hear from Mr. Matthews (3/22) in an e-mail asking me to call him up, which I do. I told him to just send an e-mail telling me to where to ship the tools to avoid confusion. Seven days pass without hearing anything from Mr. Matthews and again, I begin to think he accomplished reassembling his engine by some other means. Then on 3/29, I receive an e-mail with a tone of more or less giving me permission to send him the tools. He made an assumption that I was free to help him as I was in the previous week. Aside from being put off from the tone of the initial e-mail and the fact that I didn't hear anything for a week, I was in jury duty for 3 days with a break of a day in the middle where I was inundated with work for having missed work from the jury duty. So I was unable to respond to e-mail. Jury duty ended on Thursday and I was inundated with even more work on Friday. And now this. WOW! Mr. Matthews, I'm not sure what you were trying to accomplish with your e-mails and with your post to the list with questionable tone, but do you think I will want to lend my tools now?
