The target weight of the 1/2 series is somewhere around the old E30. Right now the four door one series weight ranges from the 116i, which is around 2660lbs, to the 120d which is around 2960lbs. I'd imagine any M version of the coupe weighing in somewhere in between those weights, as the diesel versions tend to be the heaviest of any of the cars. I've heard conflicting reports whether we will get valvetronic or double vanos. And the car should have the usual DSC/DBC (brake control)/EDB (a la E46 M3 diff I think), idrive (hopefully the will finally get the interface right).... so I doubt that BMW will produce anything without at least the "basic" (!) electronic helpers. Last I heard it was a 300hp 4 cylinder as well, though I've read some contradictory info saying that american dealers don't want it unless it has a 6 cylinder, which is too bad, as BMW 4 cylinders are great motors (ok I'm biased). You'll probably have to wait until at least 2007 for one, the 1/2 series is not due here before 2006, and it usually 1 to 1.5 years after the base car is introduced by the time we see an M version. Hope my M3 holds up 'till then.. -Justin -- '76 02 '97 m3 bmw cca checkout http://www.bmw2002.net

#4. Reduced power on high speed right-hand turns - from Mo Karamat

At the top of rising turn (I think that is what it is called) the car would seem to lose power, and all of the sudden would be ok. I realized that I had the ASC on, and at that moment, the sensors must have felt the rear get a little light, so the system cut power to "save" me... After turning the ASC off, the "problem" went away.. A thought... The engine just did not accelerate staying at 4000 RPM until nearly track out at which case it would pull strong down the straight. The fuel tank was 3/4 full. It didn't have the feeling of true fuel starvation, i.e., engine stumbling, momentary complete power loss, etc. I also had some trouble finding 3rd while downshifting at the end of the straights. It seemed to be a little off to the right and very intermittent. I have the UUC short shift kits and trans mount braces. Any suggestions? -Steve sayer@ayersnet.com 98 E36 M3 91 E30 M3

I am also greeted with the smell of coolant when I first turn on the heat. It goes away after the heat has been running for a few minutes. I have seen several other posts from similarly-afflicted owners, but no solutions. The car only started doing this during the last two winters. I'm wondering if BMW used the same silly crimp clamp on the heater core lines as they do for the power steering reservoir lines. - Chris (just replaced his power steering clamps)

#6. Head saga goes from bad to stupid - from KLchmn@aol.com

Date: Sat, 10 Apr 2004 16:54:01 EDT From: KLchmn@aol.com Subject: Head saga goes from bad to stupid Well, today a local BMW tech and another friend of mine stopped by to put the head back on my '95 M3 I-Stock club race car. Very kind souls indeed! As some of you know, I'm out of commission due to a tonsillectomy and other nose/throat surgery last week. My contribution to today's work was to sit on the shop stool and *supervise* (i.e., take coffee orders). You recall that previously I had a problem with the RaceWare head stud kit that I purchased. One of the nuts was oversized and didn't have any threads. <doh!> RaceWare quickly replaced the bad nut and sent two extra ones. I was happy with the good customer service on RaceWare's part. Well, today I soured on RaceWare's products again... The BMW tech was going through the final torque process on the head studs (42 ft-lbs, per RaceWare's instructions), when one of the studs snapped! We couldn't believe it. It is a good thing that I'm still on narcotic pain relievers or I'd have needed some at that point. Fortunately, we were able to get the broken piece out of the block. <whew!> To top it all off, we managed to scratch the new head gasket as we took the head off so I need another one of those. Anyone have one sitting around from the gasket kit when they put in a BMP cutting ring head gasket? Monday morning will be interesting when I call RaceWare and see what they'll do to fix this problem. I don't trust any of the studs in this set so I want to replace them all. I'll let you know how it goes. They were really good about the messed up nut, so I'm hoping for the best from them on this issue. Has anyone else experienced this type of failure before or is my stud set cursed? Hope you all are having a better weekend than I am. Cheers, Kirk Lachman Sin City Chapter '95 M3 paperweight...

They claim it's the 'new' 3/4 series due out later this year as a 2005. The 3 will designate the 4-door, while the 4 will designate coupes. Can you say, M4...sounds a little funny, but the smallish, edgy design looks pretty appealling to me! Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA BSP Champion '01 & '02 SM '03, '04

#8. temp gauge problems - from Kyle J Mathews
Top
Date: Sat, 10 Apr 2004 21:54:05 -0400 From: "Kyle J Mathews" <mathewsk@wam.umd.edu> Subject: temp gauge problems So here is the story, I went to go install my new VDO water temp gauge today, but encountered a problem. I am attempting to use the method of tapping the stock temp sender. I looked in my Bentley manual for the wiring diagram, and it said that it consisted of 2 wires a) brown/yellow and b) brown/violet. I did not know which one I wanted so I connected a wire to each and ran them inside. Well when I when to test which wire I need by attaching it to the sender spot on the gauge, I got 2 different results, both unwanted. The first wire made the factory gauge go dead, and the second wire made the after market gauge peg at full right. I am not sure what is up, the only thing that struck me as odd was that the plug off the temp sender in the head had 4 wires, but the book only listed two. Let me know if you guys know what is up. Thanks

#9. Broken 98 E36 M3 gas pedal - from Vern Anderson
Top
Date: Sun, 11 Apr 2004 09:41:33 -0400 From: "Vern Anderson" <vernon_anderson@yahoo.com> Subject: Broken 98 E36 M3 gas pedal Hello all, Yesterday at Moroso, my gas pedal broke (going into turn 9 at 9/10's, which made that turn _really_ exciting as I tried to get the car to turn without the throttle). It looks like it broke off the bottom, where it was part of the plastic piece that is down in the footboard. Anyone know where I can get a replacement? I looked online, but most of the aftermarket pedals seem to attach to the existing pedal, which obviously won't do me much good. Any ideas? I'm supposed to go to Sebring next weekend, so I'm desperate for a quick fix. There is a BMW dealer 1/2 mile from me, so I'll call them first thing Monday to see what they can do. It's a 98 M3 coupe. The top has an attached plastic piece with a hole that slides over the throttle lever. There was no clip or retainer at the top, I'm not sure if there is supposed to be or not. Someone in the paddock at Moroso said he had a similar problem with his early 97 M3, but BMW made a mid-year 97 change, so his setup was slightly different at the top of the pedal. His broke off at the top, so he was able to keep his pedal and fix the top part. Thanks in advance for any help! Vern Anderson
