They could also look at the surface hardening treatment, if any. Check your local yellow pages for "Non Destructive Testing" or similar. Mike -----Original Message----- From: KLchmn@aol.com [mailto:KLchmn@aol.com] Sent: Monday, April 12, 2004 11:45 AM To: E36M3 Subject: [E36M3] Head stud outcome -- not good Date: Mon, 12 Apr 2004 14:39:37 EDT From: KLchmn@aol.com Subject: Head stud outcome -- not good Well, I talked to the customer service guy at RaceWare and he believes that the stud that broke was overtorqued and it was an installation mistake. No offer of replacement stud or anything, just a strong message that essentially says: you screwed up. That's all well and good, but I'm curious how much over the 42 ft-lbs I'd have to go to break a 190,000 psi tensile strength bolt. Anyone have that info at hand? I offered to send the bolt back to them and he said that'd be fine but it'd cost over $300 to do the testing on it (implying that I should pay for it!). I declined to send it back. I thought they'd want to make sure everything was ok on that batch of bolts. I guess I'm the first soul who has ever broken on of their studs so it can't be the product. Maybe it's my good luck... Anyway, thought you all should know the outcome. Now I have to decide what to do for head bolts/studs and the head gasket... #3. OT: 5-series engine replacements - from Jeff Thompson

Date: Mon, 12 Apr 2004 15:25:46 -0400 From: Jeff Thompson <jthompson@telco.com> Subject: OT: 5-series engine replacements Hi everybody, Sorry for the WOB, but I have found myself needing a bigger 4-door car and I'm looking into 540i 6-speeds at the moment. For price reasons I'm concentrating on the '95-'98 years. I know that the Alusil/sulfur problems seemed to effect the late E34 and early E39 cars. Is there any way that I can look up whether a particular car had the engine block changed and at what milage without harassing my local BMW dealer to look it up for me? Will they actually do that? OBM3C: If I can find a good deal on a clean 540i I might be able to keep the M3. ;) E-mail replies appreciated so as not to clutter the list. Thanks in advance, -Jeff

So if it was done by a dealer, well then they should know about it. #6. does your 3rd gear do this? - from Chris Papademetrious
Top
Date: Mon, 12 Apr 2004 15:47:06 -0400 From: Chris Papademetrious <chrispy@ieee.org> Subject: does your 3rd gear do this? I noticed something recently on my "BMW reman" 5-speed, and I'm curious to see if it's common to all the 5-speed units. I noticed recently while I was cruising along at about 2500rpm in 3rd gear, that if I push the shifter lever upwards against the limit of travel, I feel a very noticeable vibration through the shifter. It's almost like I'm forcing something to press against something else which is unevenly shaped and rotating (how's that for vague?). At the same RPM in 1st and 5th gear, pushing the shifter upwards just results in the usual drivetrain vibration you would feel from the car. If any kind souls could check this out the next time you happen to be in your car, I'd appreciate it. Send me an off-list email, and I'll summarize whether they all do it, or whether I'm the lucky soul. I've got some other transmission issues going on right now which have got me paranoid. - Chris

A material related stress failure looks very different. Also where did the bold break? Was it at the interface of the threads to the shank?
