Now about every 3rd stop, the idle drops way low - 300 rpm or >less - and nearly stalls. I have an idle hunt problem which sounds similar to yours. When I put the clutch in as the car is rolling, the idle will begin to hunt severely, swinging between 500rpm and 1200rpm. It dips low enough that my headlights keep getting brighter, dimmer, brighter, dimmer. It drives me up a wall. Sometimes it stalls, which is even more fun. The car developed this problem two years ago. Replacing the O2 sensor didn't change the behavior one iota. I think both O2 sensors were fine, because I get good fuel economy. I'm considering replacing the idle valve next. It may not be a bad thing to do at 145k miles regardless. My car does another strange thing which may or may not be related. When the car is cold, the RPMs drop like a rock when I put the clutch in. I have to tap the gas between shifts or the car jerks severely. This behavior is also new in the last few years. Once the car warms up, the RPMs stay for a moment, then fall smoothly. I'm speculating that it's related to the above problem, and hopefully caused by a slow or sticky IAC. - Chris

Date: Fri, 16 Apr 2004 11:51:53 -0400 From: LoweSeaton@aol.com Subject: Re: [E36M3] Idle Drops on Braking Chris, I have another idea. After 3 months of fighting electrical gremlins and dead batteries, my mechanic now tells me my alternator intermittently fails and the voltage drops below 10 volts. Looking back now, I think when the alternator was shorting out, it caused much of my idle problems. You may want to have a mechanic test your alternator. If you have 145K miles on your M3, your alternator is very likely weak considering my alternator crapped out at 75,000 miles. In fact, I think my alternator has been acting up for years. I've had minor undiagnosised electrical problems for years. I know I have severe electrical problems now for sure. It is easy to go in through the back seat and only pull back about 5-10% of the trunk liner. If you are putting in Adjustable rear shocks I would strongly recommend a setup that can be removed in the future from the wheel well. I just used the Z3 reinforcement plates with the studs from E46M3 RSMs welded in upside down. Cheers, Eric

#10. Re: [E36M3] M3 forced induction - from Hunt Hodgetts

Date: Sat, 17 Apr 2004 08:49:45 -0700 (PDT) From: Hunt Hodgetts <hhodgetts@yahoo.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] M3 forced induction Shel, Sorry I didn't respond sooner. I was in West Palm this week buying Mercedes and a BMW convertible for a couple customers. Just got back yesterday... Actually, I did not turbocharge my M3. I added the AA supercharger kit. The results have been pretty spectacular. The M3 definitely feels faster but it doesn't feel as fast as it really is. It feels like an extra 40 hp. But when I race cars that used to stay right with me, at the 1/2 mile point, those same cars are now 1/4 mile behind me!! I chose the AA supercharger over Dinan because it has an intercooler. The installation was very easy. The AA kit is about as close to "bolt on" as you could hope to get. There are a few negatives that you have to be prepared for. The supercharger generates quite a bit of noise. It will overpower any aftermarket exhaust out there. I drive moderately aggressively. In stock form, I was getting 20 mpg in the city. I now get 15 mpg with the supercharger. I have had to make changes to my driving style as well. The M3 now has so much power that I have to focus a great deal on making my shifts as smooth as possible or I will break the rear end loose. Would I do it again? Yes, but cost is a big factor. My AA supercharger kit was only $5k installed (bought it during their christmas sale). Many turbo kits are $10k. When the cost of a mod gets that high, I would seriously consider an E46 M3, 2.7T S4, or AMG Mercedes as well. I have had no mechanical problems related to the supercharger and I expect to keep my M3 until it has well over 300k miles on it. Eventually, I'll convert it to a dedicated track car. Call me if you would like any infomation about my M3 (no it's not for sale) or would like to come by and see it. 404-644-6020 Hunt ************************************************ I've been toying with the idea of turbo charging my 98 M3. It has just turned 90k and runs very well. No problems and very well maintained. I know you turbo charged your 125k daily driver and wanted to get your honest feedback. Whhat kit did you go with? What are the stats? Was it really worth the expense? Etc, etc. Shel Hart 1998 M3 2002 996 ===== Hunt Hodgetts (404) 644-6020 Wholesale Auto Broker Atlanta, GA Note - I only have access to my email account once a day.
