Yes, BTW, I > did remove them. Dave, One clear function is providing forward attachment point to the plastic wheel well liners and securing the brake duct between the liner and the front apron. Also given the funky shape, there must be some aerodynamic purpose to those parts. Their importance is hard to guesstimate. Even though I can't tell the difference with them in place and without, I have faith in BMW's engineering talent. That leads me to assume that the pork chops and the center shield should provide some marginal downforce effect. The shifter is correctly bent and he offers a bent selector rod to compensate for the lower shift lever pivot. I've had one in my car for years and feel that it does its job. The only issue I have now is my tranny is close to being toast but that's more of a function of early driver schools and crunching third gear than anything else. Once I rebuild that sucker, all should be well. On a side note, Wayne Miller has tried many different aftermarket short shifters in his E46M3 (B&M, I believe Rogue, and some others). By chance opportunity a friend of ours sold his E46M3 after purchasing a short shift kit from Ron and not installing it. He gave it to Wayne and we went to work on installing it. I wasn't surprised at all when Wayne proclaimed it the best shifter that's been in his car. I'm not affiliated with Ron and have nothing to gain from him selling one SS kit or one hundred. Just thought I would offer some credit where credit is due since Ron doesn't advertise and that I'm happy with his SS kit. Date: Tue, 15 Jun 2004 10:35:13 -0700 (PDT) From: Brad Ahrens <txsaggie97@yahoo.com> Subject: Short Shifter Alex - To reduce the slop in your stock shifter you are going to have to take out the aptly named "bitch clip" and replace the rubber bushing up there. Maybe a new plastic cup while you are there too...all the other bits other than the clip are really easy but the clip bushing really helps. I got my parts from Ron Stygar to go along with a used Ron Stygar short shifter I bought. For those that don't know Ron Re-bends Stock MZ3 shifters and sells (or at least used to) them and associated parts to revitalize your shifter at a very reasonable price. Done this in the dallas area and would be happy to "supervise" with a beer as needed. Wouldn't make a bad DIY lift day project as much of the work is from below....

I've had this daily driver since new! Only major issue have been the replacement of the ABS pump which failed at 112K. Other than that, everything else have been routine maintenance. Dinan chip, throttle body, airbox and exhaust installed in '96. Dinan MAF added when it became available in '97. No secrets other than 4K oil/filter changes with Mobil 1 and using premium one-brand gas (Chevron...as much as possible) since new. Oil switched to Lubro Moly in 2001. This is one of the few auto tranny '95s and the ZF trans have never been touched...original lifetime fluid still in there! Only leaking areas have been a power steering hose and oil filter housing gasket which were promptly addressed. Done most Insp. 1s and 2s myself...non easy stuffs I take it to my mechanic/friend. Body/paint still looks great...never been through carwash, always driveway handwashed! Interior 90% perfect...leather creased in driver's seat side bolster. No plans whatsoever to part with car. When engine fails, Euro S50 and 5-spd manual will be installed. Daily driver will then be an E36 M3 4dr automatic!... Regards, David '88 M3 '95 M3 200K mile club member

The shifters are totally redesigned and improved greatly over the OEM design. I happen to have a Rogue that is night-and-day better than stock, but I wouldn't mind a UUC either. To be fair, I haven't driven an e36 with a Z3 shifter installed. However, a Z3 shifter doesn't address the increased lever force required nor the change in angle of the linkage which also puts more pressure on the whole system, so for those reasons, I wouldn't consider one.
