Worked fine, and in fact, it got the speedometer to be close to perfect. Note the 95's actually had 235/40's, not 45's. The 45's are a little taller than stock, but that's what I wanted at the time with a car lowered for autox. They should still work OK on the 7.5" rim. The 235/40x17 was the stock size for the non-staggered M3 setup. I know ALL r-comp tires run wider than listed, but I don't think you will want the extra height of the 45 series tire. Slower acceleration, more weight, more sidewall flex (I'm guessing on this one, but in general this is true) Lots of folks run the 235/40x17 for club racing and enduro, but I can't remember the 45 series tire being run except at DE's, and then usually because they could get the 40 series tire in time. >-------------------- 10 -------------------- >Date: Wed, 16 Jun 2004 14:50:09 -0400 >From: "Townsend, William" <wtownsen@enterasys.com> >Subject: Tire fitment question. > > >I have a 96 M3 and want to run 235/45 17" RA1's all around on the stock >staggered rims. (BMW did it on the 95 M3) [as usual, the rims > are 7.5f 8.5r] Was thinking the 255 for the rear but no one > has them. Bill, Are you asking about the 235/45 or 235/40 size? Toyo makes both in the RA1. Actually the 235/45 is acceptable for 7.5 inch rims. Toyo recommends 7.5-9.0 inch rims. The 235/40 is different though. Toyo recommends 8.0-9.5 inch rims for 235/40. Reason?? The 45 series tire is rounder and has a larger sidewall height. See the Toyo web site: http://toyo.com/tires/index_frame.html I am currently fitting Toyo 255/40 RA1's on my '95 M3. I must have gotten the last two 255/40 RA1 in the country. One came from Coppell, TX and the other came from Illinois. I can tell you 255/40 RA1's are problematic. I had to go to some extreme measures to make them fit. Believe it or not, 255/40 RA1 on stock M3 8.5 inch wide, 41 mm offset rims do not rub the strut housing. The problem was the outside edge at the fender. I had to increase the camber to at least -3.0 degrees. The rear was the same story. No rubbing on the inside of the wheelwell or muffler but big time rubbing on the outside fender. I almost sliced one tire open before I got home from the tire store. I again maxxed out the negative camber on the rear and aggressively rolled my rear fender lips. I ended up taking a pair of padded jaw pliers and squeezing the fender lip in. No roller would be able to apply the force needed to curl the fender lip that I needed. Bottom line, 255/40 RA1 are going to rub on stock BMW 8.5 inch rims unless you take some heroic efforts. I probably won't be able to live with them on the street due to reduced tire life with the negative camber needed. We'll see. I have run R compound tires on the street for years. For you, I'd recommend 235/40. Or did you want the 45 series because they are cheaper? Vilven Tire wanted $195 for the 235/40 size. The 40 series tire is quite a bit shorter for better acceleration. Toyo < http://www.toyo.com/tires/index_frame.html > actually recommends a range of 7.5-8.0-9.0, 8.0 being the designed nominal fitment for the RA1. Per Toyo the 235/40ZR17 RA1 should be run on a rim range of 8.0-8.5-9.5 However I'm running my 235/40ZR17 RA1 on 7.5's all around. I have a 98 M3/4. No problems with headroom. Here's what I'm thinking about but could use some input from those that have done it as to wether it helped. 1. Smaller diameter MOMO-type wheel with a spacer to move the wheel off of my thighs a bit. I know the risks with removing the airbag... 2. Need to modify/remove the cruise control stalk. Whoever put it where it is, is a short dude! Any ideas how to do this? Bend the stalk, shorten it, etc? 3. Could use more footwell room for my size 14s. I have ben thinking about doing some surgery on the underside of the dash around the heater vents. My toes hang up on it when I heel toe and occasionally when I'm workin' the clutch pedal. Has anyone tried this and did it help? Any other ideas? I have had the car for a few months and love it, but leg and foot room is a little tight for me. Thanks!

It can be done but I'd recommend the 235/40/17 instead. Shorter sidewall, slightly better gearing (total tire circumferene is smaller), etc. I'm using 235/40/17 which started non-shaved and got 2 years out of them on 17x8.5" rims. Best regards, Marc 95M3
