#3. AC problem / Aux fan question - from Robert S. Hatrak II
Top
Date: Tue, 10 Aug 2004 13:51:59 -0700 From: "Robert S. Hatrak II" <rob@hatrak.com> Subject: AC problem / Aux fan question Group, I'm having major problems with the AC system in my car and I am hoping that someone here may have some wisdom to share with me. Three months ago, the AC started blowing hot air. Since then, I have replaced all of the following parts on the car: - AC Compressor - expansion valve - Receiver/dryer - Pressure switch sensor (on the receiver/dryer) - aux fan temp sensor (with the 318ti one - 80/88c) - IHKR computer (under the OBC) - 2 fan relays (the yellows) - 1 compressor relay (purple) All fuses are ok, and I have jumpered the aux fan in both speed settings and both work. After replacing all of these parts, I now have air that works perfectly about 25-30% of the time. One minute I have very cold air, and the next I have blow torch hot air coming from the vents. The problem appears day or night, with hot or cool outside temps. Occasionally, when the AC compressor is kicking on/off (while going berserk), the two green lights on my climate controls will flicker. These are the two lights that indicate the on/off status of the compressor (snowflake) and the re-circulate mode. While troubleshooting the problem, I made an interesting discovery. One day I slammed my hood in frustration, and the system kicked on. Making note of that, I tried closing the hood the next time the problem popped up, and same result....everything worked. I am able to make the AC system kick on about 80% of the time by slamming the hood. Obviously, this is far from ideal while driving across town in the 115 degree Las Vegas heat! Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be going on? The front bumper is coming off the car tonight in an attempt to find what may be loose, shorting, etc. The car has been seen by two dealers and several independents, and so far no luck. Will a failed/failing aux fan prevent the AC compressor from kicking on, or will a problematic aux fan just prevent the air from being cooled enough while the car is at rest? My aux fan does appear to work, but it also makes a slight scraping noise while on. Has anyone else heard of anything like this before? I am really anxious to be able to enjoy my car again! Thanks, Rob

#4. Stoptech reviews? - from AVUSM3@aol.com

Date: Tue, 10 Aug 2004 17:24:00 EDT From: AVUSM3@aol.com Subject: Stoptech reviews? Is there anyone on the list with significant experience with Stoptech's on the track? If so, can you let us know how well the kit performs on an E36M3? I am particularly interested in how resistant the kit is the rotor warping/pad material transfer issues. I do 15-20 track days a year and continue to have an on/off issue with brake "judder" on track. Sometimes the stock rotors and race pads work well together, other times they do not. I am thinking of getting Stoptechs to limit or eliminate this problem. Any feedback on them would be appreciated. Thanks, John

#9. Sears portable jack sale - from ROWERS41@aol.com

Date: Tue, 10 Aug 2004 22:36:53 EDT From: ROWERS41@aol.com Subject: Sears portable jack sale Ok, I have been wanting a new portable jack and those aluminum ones from Harbor Freight look real nice at $79. I was out the other night at Sear to get a 12 x 1.5 tap for my track box just in case when i saw they had a sale on a bunch of stuff, including their portable jack---$ 20. Ok, for 20 bucks, I can replace it annually. Its not ideal, but my last one lasted 18 years. Cheers, Steve Rowe

#10. FIXED: [E36M3] AC problem / Aux fan question - from Robert S. Hatrak II

Date: Tue, 10 Aug 2004 22:36:41 -0700 From: "Robert S. Hatrak II" <rob@hatrak.com> Subject: FIXED: [E36M3] AC problem / Aux fan question Group, The problem with my M3's AC system has been found and fixed. It turns out that there is a Molex-type wire connector located in the driver's footwell area that had worked it's way loose. Slamming the hood, closing the driver's door, and banging on the trim panel above the driver's shins were causing this connection to wiggle. This loose connection is what caused the lights on the AC control head to flash, and the system to turn on/off at will. If anyone is curious what the connector looks like, let me know. I'll be happy to send you a digital photo of the culprit. MANY MANY thanks go out to Chester & Jim for all of their tech. and parts help, Neil for his helping me with the relays, and Adam, Ralph, & Patrick here in Las Vegas. I owe you all a huge Thank You. Rob
