#5. Michelin Pilot Sport Cup Fitment - from Andrew Kalman

Due to operator error I lost all the emails when people were discussing fitment of these tires earlier this week (I think it was on this list :-) ). Can someone email me the relevant conclusion? i want to know if a 255 on an 8.5" is gonna clear in the rear of my LWT -- I have rolled the fenders, but haven't bashed in the stock exhaust. All-stock suspension, save for Koni SA's. Thanks, -- ______________________________________ Andrew E. Kalman, Ph.D. aek@pumpkininc.com

I replied to Chester that 255/40-17 Toyo RA1 tires are the absolute maximum size that will fit my M3. (I have them on now) Some general points. You will have to do more than gently roll your rear fenders. If you haven't done it already, figure out some way to remove the rubber coating in the seam of the rear fender lip. I used a Dremmel with a grinding wheel and carefully ground out the rubber stuff. Then take a 24 oz ball peen hammer and beat the lip flush. You can wrap the hammer head with cheesecloth if you wish but you really don't have to worry about chipping the paint. I am making it sound worse than it is. That is about all you can do on the rear and fortunately, that is about all you need. I didn't have anything close to a clearance problem on the inside. I can't imagine you would either. No need to bash in your muffler. You will need to max out the negative camber on the rear but you probably have already done that. Of course, all my comments are predicated on the assumption that Pilot Sport Cup tires are the same size or smaller than my 255/40 Toyo RA1s. Good luck, Lowell Seaton '95 M3 - not a Lightweight

You can rent the fender rolling tool from Tire Rack (although they tend to have a long wait list) or from Brett@Koala Motorsport. It'll cost you $75 including shipping both ways. Then use a heat gun to heat up the paint and the undercoating really well. The undercoating will actually get hot and gooey. Then just use the rolling tool to fold the lip up and under. The undercoating will goosh out of the way and then reseal the folded lip to keep crap out of there. I did this a few years back and it worked great. I also was able to flare the fenders a bit with the tool. Very easy to use and no surprises. -josh --- LoweSeaton@aol.com wrote: figure out some way > to remove the rubber coating in the seam of the rear > fender lip. Who makes it and what temp is it? I was hoping to find something in the range of an E30 M3, ie. 80 C. Is there any harm in doing this on a race car in Texas? TIA, Scott
