Your oil will run hotter and that is expected. Don't heat up the coolant in the process. And you might also want to experiment with removing the thermostat altogether on a racecar or gutting it with various numbers of holes drilled in the surround in lieu of machining several restrictor plates. Under most track conditions, no thermostat is best. And this does change the stable temperature due to flow changes. Chester, what did your car do when you installed these? Any input, even theoretical is appreciated." I've had them on for 2 years and 30,000 miles. The car dropped say 3/8" in the beginning, and now it sits quite a bit lower than it used to. haven't measured it but it's visibly lower. I'm still quite happy with the koni/OE sport suspension. andy r.

#3. Switch to synthetic at 81K mi - from Jason Olin

Date: Mon, 16 Aug 2004 04:37:59 -0700 (PDT) From: Jason Olin <jtolin64@yahoo.com> Subject: Switch to synthetic at 81K mi Ok- So my local mechanic did my inspection II and I noticed on the receipt that they switched the car to synthetic oil. It has 81K miles. Looking at the other forums, there is a mixture of opinion over switching, that it clears out the grundge that keeps the seals sealed, or that it's not such a big deal. Anyone have any experience with this? Now that the oil is in there--is it a problem to switch it back? Thanks, Jason '97 M3 Cosmos Black Sharked, Dinan (Koni) suspension, Hella angel-eyes PS-- Regarding the new e90 3 series, as was said 8/8 on the www.autospies.com comment page, "This is something created from a different dimension. This is alien work. I have seen little kids design much more beautiful and aesthetic things. How much time and effort was put into this car's design now? I am sure if I knew it would make me cry." __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New and Improved Yahoo! Mail - 100MB free storage! http://promotions.yahoo.com/new_mail

The latest is my e36 M3. I have yet to have a problem after the switch related to oil in any car. No leaking seals, etc. ....... #6. Front Underpanel - from Kent L. Shephard

Date: Mon, 16 Aug 2004 08:22:20 -0700 From: "Kent L. Shephard" <kents@kls-consulting.com> Subject: Front Underpanel Hi All, This past weekend I was on Interstate 80 near SF and I hit some debris in the road. It was a duffle bag full of something, don't know what. Anyway I was doing about 60 and all of a sudden the duffle bag appears. I can't brake; lest I get rear ended. I can't switch lanes; no room and no time. The only thing I can do is run it over and pray. The result is that the lower lip was ripped out of the front bumper, both liners in the wheel wells are cracked at the mounting points, the underpanel fell apart like a jigsaw puzzle. I think the only thing that saved the oil pan and rest of the underside of the car was the fact that I installed the "X" brace. I could see remnants of the bag. So, anyway, I was thinking of replacing the underpanel with the one from JT-Designs, when I'm having the car repaired. Any overall thoughts on the repairs, besides the JT-Designs underpanel? Thanks, Kent -- "To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." 1918, Theodore Roosevelt

A long time ago, someone is in need of an exhaust hanger because his is broken. You happen to have a brand new one as a spare and offer it so that everything will be buttoned up right. Two years pass and finally the person gets around to paying for it; however, when the person gives you money, he short changes you and gives you $10. I know for a fact since I order these through my dealer account that the price I paid for them was more than $25....that's not even list price. So you mention right there on the spot when the person offers you the money that it's more like $25 and not $10. The person simply quips, "o...you remembered wrong" and then just leaves it like that. I was just dumbfounded. Now, this was my friend who got short changed and I know he's too nice because I would have shoved the money right back in his face and said, "Give me a new exhaust hanger then." Have you ever in your whole life? Chester still annoyed and it wasn't even my money =====

What objective indicators of 'stretching' or 'wear' did you have to make this diagnosis? > and the noise was most prominent in the 1800-2K RPM range. That is the classic worn primary tensioner syndrome. The replacement tensioner is ~$75 and takes all of 5 minutes to replace. See the picture #37 here: http://tinyurl.com/5wnqz > After replacement of the chain, chain tensioner and VANOS unit, > all is quite now with this motor (currently at ~120K miles). > The noises made by the chain and the VANOS unit were easy to > distinguish. > > I suppose the noise you are hearing could be being made by the > upper timing chain (cam to cam). Don't know what this one sounds > like when noisy, but this does not seem to be a common problem... > at least, it is not discussed often in the various discussion groups. Right. A local experienced BMW wrench uses the RPM when the noise is loudest to identify the failing part. 1600-2500 is the primary tensioner. The secondary tensioner (the one Chris is talking about) murmurs through the higher RPMs and is much more of a PITA to replace. Eric, Do yourself a favor and start with the $75 primary tensioner. You can't go wrong - if the noise is still there, you would have replaced the tensioner as a 'while you are in there' segue of a larger (Vanos or Secondary tensioner) job. HTH, alex f
