Date: Thu, 19 Aug 2004 05:47:39 -0700 (PDT) From: driver8 ///M3 <driver8m3@yahoo.com> Subject: fault codes i posted earlier about the FE and FC codes i was continually getting. i tried a new gas cap, but that did not solve the problem. on the advice of other listers, i picked up the charcoal cannister (i think the actual name is "carbon cannister") from the dealer ($115 @ VOB in maryland). that seems to have solved the problem. now, i can finally get that emissions test done. regarding installation: there are 2 clamps holding 2 hoses to the cannister (a 3rd hose is not clamped on). they were tough to remove. maybe theres a way to remove them without destroying them, but i couldnt figure it out. so, pick up a couple of new clamps before you start. also, one of the hoses was stuck to the cannister pretty good and i ended up breaking the cannister piece off into the hose. i had a hard time getting that piece out of the hose. russell dakar 99

I've been throwing $ at my low brake pedal and it still is not fixed. TMS has bled the brakes multiple times, replaced the Master cylinder and still the pedal is really low. Also the pedal feedback under hard braking is kind of numb...... If the car is running and I pump the pedal once the pedal will return to the proper place and have a really nice firm feel to it. If I just go to use the brakes the pedal will go almost to the floor before firming up.... What do you all think it is? And what should I throw money at next? The moment I purchased it I switched to BMW synth oil the 5-30 one ($4* a bottle) not the super expensive ~$10 used for the e46 //M3. For the past 3 years I have been autoXing the car regularly and took it to the track 4-6 days/year. The car has no issues whatsoever. If you research synthetic oil vs. mineral oil you'll see why. Since synthetic I do oil changes every 9000 miles BUT change the oil filter every 4,500 miles. People have strong opinions on oil change frequency but based on facts this interval WORKS FOR ME. So the morale of the story is that you should thank your mechanic unlike a local guy that changed my brake fluid and put in SILICONE based DOT 5.1 even though even the F... bottle had a big warning NOT TO! Stefano '98 stock //M3 w synth oil and the right brake fluid (now that I do it myself) *I'm thinking about switching to Mobil1 -------------------- IN RESPONSE TO: -------------------- Date: Mon, 16 Aug 2004 04:37:59 -0700 (PDT) From: Jason Olin <jtolin64@yahoo.com> Subject: Switch to synthetic at 81K mi Ok- So my local mechanic did my inspection II and I noticed on the receipt that they switched the car to synthetic oil. It has 81K miles. Looking at the other forums, there is a mixture of opinion over switching, that it clears out the grundge that keeps the seals sealed, or that it's not such a big deal. Anyone have any experience with this? Now that the oil is in there--is it a problem to switch it back? This is alien work. I have seen little kids design much more beautiful and aesthetic things. How much time and effort was put into this car's design now? #6. 245/35-18 Tires - from geoff atkinson
Top
Date: Thu, 19 Aug 2004 16:22:52 -0400 From: "geoff atkinson" <pskalc@hotmail.com> Subject: 245/35-18 Tires Hi everyone, I'm in the market for some new tires for my '95. These will be mounted on the wheels that came with the car, because I don't really want to invest in another new set...for now. The wheels are 18"x8" BBS RX's. Now, the tire size I'm looking at is 245/35/18. Good idea? Anyone done this? I found this size in a Toyo T1-S. I have decided against 225/40/18 (too narrow), 235/40/18 (too tall), and 255/40/18 (too wide and too tall, right? anyone using this?) The rear fenders are rolled somewhat. So, what's the general feelling on this... Rubbing? Good size, or not? Thanks for any help, in advance. -Geoff Atkinson

#8. Oli pan sealant?? - from Jamie Howton

Date: Thu, 19 Aug 2004 16:17:44 -0500 From: "Jamie Howton" <jhowton@fotofab.com> Subject: Oli pan sealant?? Does anyone have a recommendation for sealant to use with the OE oilpan gasket for my 330i? TIS specifies Drei Bond 1209 and when I asked about this at my BMW dealer parts counter they looked at me like I was nuts and told me to just use silicone sealant. The guy at my local NAPA recommended the black RTV but I wanted to see if anyone here had a better sugestion. TIA for any info. Regards Jamie Howton

In my search for this, I found something listed in the TIS or ETK as being equivalent. It's blue and gooey but I don't think it dries quite the same as what they used at the factory. I like the stuff they used at the factory because it looks like it dries nicely and when you remove everything, you can just peel it off...no gooey mess. Perhaps silicone wouldn't stick to the aluminm as well... I received an e-mail from a list member a while ago: "I believe I found "Drei Bond". It is a Japanese company! Their English-language web site uses "Three Bond" as their name. Their web site is "threebond.co.jp". Drei Bond 1209 is an black RTV sealant. Loctite RTV 598 Black would be a quality equivalent." So it looks like RTV sealant is fine. You also only have to put it on two or four spots. Good luck, Chester --- Jamie Howton <jhowton@fotofab.com> wrote: > Does anyone have a recommendation for sealant to use with the OE oilpan > gasket for my 330i? Good idea? I'd say yes to this. Watch the offset on the wheels, and you may need spacers up front. Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA BSP Champion '01 & '02 SM '03
