I recently installed the TCKline double adjustable suspension and thought I had it set to a SUV ride height. Today, I swapped the Koni SA/stock springs back in (it was just too bouncy for every day commuting) and I was wrong...the stock springs/koni SAs were way taller ;) For the race suspension, I installed swapped '96+ hats and M12 shims that I bought at the local hardware store. I was running massive amounts of negative camber :) Of course, my toe was all screwed up. Now that we have a Longacre toe gauge, the next track event will be more fun. On a side note, on the way to the track, I suffered a puncture (that I didn't notice) which then turned into a very unstable car at 100mph...big white cloud, lots of vibration...YEOW!! Dismounted the tire today....much easier than doing the remaining S03s.. There were various opinions, below are the results from my car. I measured the distance from the center of each wheel to the center of the fender lip prior to changing the struts and shocks and after changing them. Here are the numerical before and after results: B A LF 13.5 14 RF 13.5 14 LR 12.25 12.5 RR 12.5 12.5 Here's a before pic: http://www.z28racergirl.com/images/m3suspension/before.jpg And a (not so well light balanced) after pic: http://www.z28racergirl.com/images/m3suspension/after.jpg The stock struts and shocks that I removed had little gas left. I could push them down and they would barely move back up. They were dead. Someone had asked what the pressure required was to sustain pressure on the Bilstein shocks. I tested this on a bathroom scale (fortunately the wife is a racer, otherwise she wouldn't appreciate the mark I left in the scale - she understands a good cause); the stock struts wieghed 10.5 or so pounds, the scale showed 60 pounds when the shaft began to drop, and I had to maintain the scale at 30 - 40 pounds to keep the shaft level (tough to measure as I couldn't be above and beside the strut simultaneously). What does that mean? I don't know. I just wanted to convey the data. So, in my mind the Bilsteins essentially maintained the stock ride height. It went up a litte, but I can see how the stock units being worn would have dropped the ride height. I have only driven the car around the neighborhood a couple of times, so I can't speak to the feel of the ride. Initially it feels stiff, but I've been driving with shot struts and shocks for who knows how long. If anyone is curious ask me after a few weeks and the NASA Sears Point event Sept 11, and I can tell you how the new stuff compares to the old stuff. Also, there had been discussion of Bilstein altering there pieces. Perhaps this accounts for the disparity in opinon. Just for fun, here's a pic of the car after I dropped it from the jack stands, before I drove it around: http://www.z28racergirl.com/images/m3suspension/beforeafter.jpg Jason My apologies for the previous partial post. I hit some magic key combo that signalled yahoo to send.

#5. Re: [E36M3] SAE Oil Specification - from LoweSeaton@aol.com

Date: Mon, 23 Aug 2004 01:10:28 EDT From: LoweSeaton@aol.com Subject: Re: [E36M3] SAE Oil Specification Steve, API oil specification is a non-issue. No need to worry about it. EVERY oil you can buy (except for one) is rated the latest, greatest API rating. All oil sold is good for every engine made in the last 50+ years. As new oils come out, they simply replace the previous API rating. In fact, you can't buy oil that was specified for the E36 - it is no longer made. I don't know the exact spec (I'm too lazy to look in the owner's manual) but I'll guess it was probably SH. I think all oils are now SK or maybe SL. Just go to the nearest place to buy oil and get whatever brand and viscosity you want. And what is the one oil you can buy that won't work? It is hard to find but you might come across some "non-detergent" oil. It will probably be straight SAE 30 weight. Non-detergent oil is not API rated so it would not be appropriate. And I guess to be complete, "racing" oils that are not API rated either but I doubt you would consider buying them. My local Autozone has some straight SAE 70 weight oil that is not API rated. I doubt you would want straight 70 weight. Redline's Racing oils are straight weight too. I'm sure they are not API rated. But you would want to use Redline's mulit-viscosity street oils. Lowell Seaton '95 M3 --------------------------------------------- steve.tymoszuk@tds.net writes: Does anyone know what SAE oil specifications the engine oil is called out for the e36 engines? I seem to remember seeing a list of oils that meet/exceed the factory spec and can't find it after an hour. I'm not looking to debate "which oil is better" thread, I would like to know which brands of oil meet/exceed factory specs.

Date: Mon, 23 Aug 2004 01:28:05 EDT From: LoweSeaton@aol.com Subject: Re: [E36M3] Bilstein shocks and struts: results of ride height question Jason, You confirmed about what I would argue. The front Bilsteins raise an M3 about 1/2" and the rears raise it about 1/4". What does the 40 lbs mean? The struts are directly attached to the wheels. If you had a friend go to the other front corner and both of you pulled up on the bumper with 40 lbs worth, you car will raise up that much. That is what the Bilstein struts are doing. After a few pumps to seat the pads against the rotors, the pedal hardly moves and is rock solid. The car is OFF. If I turn the car on, and then pump the brake pedal, it travels a lot further down in its stroke before it gets firm. Boy, I wish I had a pedal that feels like it does when the car is off. ;) Until next time... Todd 1998 BMW Dinan M3 coupe BMW CCA member, Boston Chapter ---
