What a PITA. I did end up removing the glove box to make it easier, but either way my back was screaming. I have my air flow back. I had not done mine in two years. I found bees and other unmentionables in there. The recommended interval is every 15,000 miles! Guess I'll have to stay on top of that. Jamie Thomas 97 M3/4

#3. Borla Exhaust - from John Hoffner

Date: Mon, 23 Aug 2004 15:12:46 -0700 From: John Hoffner <jhoffner@gcfinc.com> Subject: Borla Exhaust This is such a subjective question so here are my opinions of the sound quality. I had a Borla stainless steel cat. back exhaust on a 95 325is. I think the sound coming out of the Borla was great. In my opinion it was not to loud at idle or highway cruising but it had a nice deep throaty sound when I got in the throttle. The Borla is a little louder than the Scorpion that I had on my last E36 M3. You know from the E30 that the build quality and material are first rate. The fit and finish on the one that I installed on the E36 was great. The box arrived with everything needed and all the mounting points matched the stock mounting points. This was an easy unbolt and rebolt. I did not weigh the Borla against the Scorpion but my perception is that the Scorpion is lighter. The Borla had round tips and was less noticeable that the Scorpion with the DTM tips. These are the only two systems that I've had experience with. I had one on my E30 M3 and liked the sound/look. I also like the service from Borla. I had to have it replaced and they shipped me a new one, with no questions and I shipped the bad one back when I got around to it. Anyway, sound on an E36, thoughts??? Kent

Meaning that they don't require to be vented? Or do some model require venting? I'm just curious, now that I'm at 60,500 (& change) mi on my 99 M3 with the original battery, I've been more mindful of its replacements when the time comes... My M3 LWT has been in indoor heated storage for several months, with its Optima red-top disconnected. When I opened up the trunk yesterday, I noticed that the terminal end of the ground cable -- which had been resting right next to one of the Optima's vent holes -- had an incredible amount of built-up corrosion on it. Not the usual white powdery stuff, but some really hard, smooth, dark material that looked kinda like wax but required a chipping hammer to remove. I then sanded it a little, neutralized it with baking soda, and put it all back together. Moral -- keep stuff away from battery vents, even when the battery is disconnected! -- ______________________________________ Andrew E. No, they're maintenance-free, but not vent-free. Pretty much all Lead-Acid batteries require a vent of some sort ... it's just that a normal battery will vent gas+liquid, but an Optima should only vent gas. BTW, my Optima is 9 years old and works perfectly. -- ______________________________________ Andrew E. Kalman, Ph.D. aek@pumpkininc.com

#8. Volume control madness with stock head unit - from Marc Gomillion
Top
Date: Mon, 23 Aug 2004 18:53:42 -0500 From: "Marc Gomillion" <marcg@austin.rr.com> Subject: Volume control madness with stock head unit About a year ago, the volume control of the stock head unit in my 1998 M3/4 with HK malfunctioned - turning it in either direction made the volume louder, eventually reaching the point of clipping. I found that adjusting the speed sensitivity of the volume control (GAL in diagnostic mode) would restore normal functioning, but the problem would occur again within a month or so. I then replaced the original battery last December and the problem went away until last week. Now, adjusting the speed sensitivity doesn't "fix" the problem - turning the volume control knob gives completely random results - louder, softer or nothing. I found some old posts about stock head units losing volume altogether, but haven't found any about this particular problem. Has anyone else had this? If so, can the head unit be fixed at a reasonable cost? Since I suspect that this is not fixable, I've been monitoring the availability of aesthetically compatible replacement head units. Sadly, the amber lit Alpine units aren't available in the US anymore, but Clarion has now introduced a couple of models, DXZ645MP and DXZ745MP, with user selectable colors for the display and button lighting, and fairly conservative styling. Does anyone have experience with or opinions about these? Thanks, Marc Gomillion --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Check out the CDA-9831, CDA-9833 and CDA-9835. I have the CDA-9835 in my car, Very cool biolite, black and white, 4 line display. Looks great in the dash. All lights are amber and the display is b/w.
