Hmmm this is interesting because I just bought my 1997 M3/4 and it failed VA emissions. I wonder if I need this dealer flash upgrade. This should be free then, I take it? Anyway to find out if I need it? Thanks! ted

Date: Wed, 20 Oct 2004 16:37:05 -0400 From: "Ron Buchalski" <rbuchals@hotmail.com> Subject: Re: Are the claimed HP gains really possible? Pat, It's BS. The hp gain is minimal and, I would suspect that it's repeatable. The measured gain is very small (5hp, 1lb-ft), and the gain varies across the speed (rpm) range, so it's not 5hp at all rpms. And, 1lb-ft of torque gain is no gain....two measurements, back to back, could show the same difference, without ANY change to the car! Plus, from the performance graph, where the horizontal axis is mph, I assume that the four 'bands' are measurements taken while the car is accelerating on the dyno in first, second, third, and fourth gears. So, the only valid 'run' (wide range of RPMs, throttle fully opened) is the fourth gear run, covering 96 to 136mph. The biggest 'gain' appears to be at around 126mph, where it may be 8hp. Another nit....along the right side, where it says "SAE Corrected Torque (ft-lbs)". Is this something that dynojet prints, or is it something entered by the tech? Engine torque is measured in units of lb-ft. Not very impressive. Bottom line...Conforti software will provide better gains, for less money, and will give a better midrange gain. -rb >Date: Wed, 20 Oct 2004 13:01:02 -0400 >From: Patrick Goss - PA <Patrick_Goss@GMACM.COM> >Subject: Are the claimed HP gains really possible? > >http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33689&item >=7928741683&rd=1 >

But with these coils, you'll have those cool blinking LEDs!!! Bling factor alone makes it worth 20 HP! =) Chester =====

I don't want to start any flame wars, but... 1] ...the actual definition is ft-lbf. 2] ...the order of the units is trivial; lbf-ft is the same as ft-lbf. The dash (in this sense) signifies multiplication. It should be represented by a middle-dot (. <-may not show properly for some) or asterisk (*). I just don't know which ones it has, or > if > it has the latest and greatest. Here is the interesting part. TSB 12-02-99 does not seem to exist anymore. I've heard of a couple people who's dealer was clueless and could not locate that software upgrade. TSB 12-03-99 directly references the software update for the cold start issue. Thats the only one I could locate recently. My guess is that this TSB should be enough info for the dealer to find the P16 update in their MODIC and perform the flash update. Note sure why this information is harder to find now. I had this update done, and it cured all the cold start issues. FYI, the newest software revision was P16. -Justin '76 02 '97 m3 http://www.bmw2002.net

And even if this weren't the case, $450 for 5HP just seems like a lousy $$/HP ratio. <broken record> Spend the $450 on <1 to ~2 driving schools (depending on geographic location :-)), and learn to get the most out of the HP you do have. And improve on/practice your driving skills. </broken record> My 2 cents, Jim Bassett - beginning to feel like the "List Curmudgeon" :-)
