Josh, Use the smallest diameter wheels you can fit. The 18's are going to be more weight than you could have with the 17's, which is bad. This being unsprung weight makes it even worse. Ideally if you could get a larger wheel without the weight issue, and keeping the diameter constant, it would be best due to less side wall flex. However, with track tires, this is not as much of an issue since they tend to have stronger sidewalls. Get a set of strong 17's for track. Um, BBS has several options. The RK is a strong wheel that is rather cheap. Or, just use a set of stock wheels (somewhat heavy but cheap and available) Now, if you need the 18's to clear your brakes that is another story. Good Luck... -Chris Salter --- docwyte@comcast.net wrote: > Date: Mon, 15 Nov 2004 01:56:22 +0000 > From: docwyte@comcast.net > Subject: Is it worth getting 18" wheels for auto-x? > > Might have a chance to get a decent, light set of > 18's for track wheels. I think Bob Tunnell and others in SM or BSP are running 18's with 285/30/18 on the rear and 265/35/18 on the front (I think those are the sizes, others will know exactly)...Hoosiers...get ready for major wheel well flaring ;-)) Do the 255/40/17 VictoRacers fit front and back???? regards, Bob Gill 97 M3 Coupe SCCA Philly Region BSP Champ '01 & '02

I don't think it's cut and dried, at least when it comes to Autocross, which I know Josh does. At least around here, the fastest E36 guys in BMW CCA AR and SCCA SM all run 18", and I'm not even including guys who are stuffing 285-30 on 10-1/2" wheels under flared fenders. I think Graham also has tried both on his P-car, and found the shorter sidewalls of 18" wheels more than offset the weight cost. If you could find a lower sidewall (35 or 30 aspect) 17" tire, that'd be great, but I don't know of such a beast. Anyone? Bueller? If you do want to go with the smallest diameter possible, there are 16" rims that fit over stock brakes. You can fit 255's all the way round if you've rolled and flared the rear fenders some. You'll need a 10mm spacer up front... -josh -------------- Original message -------------- > Date: Sun, 14 Nov 2004 23:28:22 EST > From: Mdriver13@aol.com > Subject: Re: [E36M3] Is it worth getting 18" wheels for auto-x? > > In a message dated 11/14/2004 9:03:04 PM Eastern Standard Time, > docwyte@comcast.net writes: > Any real advantage to the 18's vs the 17's? I would be curious as to what reason Tunnel is choosing 18's. As for what another mentioned on the 16" option... BBS made custom 16" wheels for the E36 M3 to compete with back in the mid 90's. However, that was due to competition regulations. I've not seen other 16" wheels that fit over the brakes, and that I would trust on the track. -Chris Salter __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Check out the new Yahoo! I cleaned and swapped bulbs side to side without effect. Any ideas? thanks Perry 1997 Cosmos M3/4 www.skidmark-racing.com
