For the track, I use different front rotors and both front and rear brake pads. After returning from the track I swapped back to my street rotors and pads, and then the car sat for two weeks. When I took the car out yesterday, the brake pedal travel was unusually long but not consistent. I thought I might have boiled the (ATE blue) brake fluid at the track, so bled the brakes with new brake fluid, but the symptom remains the same. Sometimes the brakes are fine, but more often than not the pedal travels much farther than usual and the brakes seems to catch... My guess is the master cylinder, but it seems strange that is was fine at the track, and suddenly went bad. Anything else I should check, such as power brake related? Thanks for your thoughts! At this point, I think 5 mm spacers are the way to go- I only need a couple of mm to regain the lost clearance. The E36 M3 spec is 41 mm offset, and my wheels have 40 mm offset. So a 5 mm spacer would increase offset to 4 mm beyond spec. There appears to be plenty of room in the wheel wells. My question is whether there is any problem with that 4 mm extra offset. The car will be used for routine road driving- no autocross or track use. Would appreciate advice on this. Thanks for the help so far. FWIW, I have learned that there are actually two different versions of the Borbet Type H wheel- Euro and US. I have the Euro, with the center cap. (like E30's do). How can you get rid of the extremely annoying creaking noise that emanates from the back of the steering wheel? I took the covers off the steering column & greased all visible parts to no avail. There is a plastic slip ring behind the steering wheel that gets very loose P/N 32 34 1 162 804. I replaced mine and it seemed to cure the problem. I had just gotten the car back on Monday from it's valve job/cooling system/power steering system overhaul, then it was off to Gilroy & Merced for a couple of Thanksgiving meals (we usually just travel up and down the SF Peninsula, but this year other family members wanted to host the meals). While I didn't have much opportunity to search out alternative routes, there was a good twisty bit on HWY 152 between Gilroy & Watsonville that was enjoyable. But the best moment was right as we headed onto the freeway in Pleasant Hill to begin the journey. As I accelerated "briskly" <g> to blend into traffic, I could see Nikolas a bit in the rear view mirror - arms upraised as if he was enjoying a roller coaster ride and a big grin on his face. Priceless! :-) Except for the big backup on HWY 152 East heading to Merced, traffic wasn't too bad. Of course, great food and great family and friends. Statistics if anyone is interested: 311 miles travelled, 22.6MPG, 54.5MPH average, and one Check Engine Light (EVAP purge flow incorrect, or similar). It came on during our stop-n-barely-go experience on 152, so I imagine it was just a quirk of that situation. I simply reset it when I got home. Hope everyone had a safe and happy Thanksgiving. I then read an online guide, and instead of backing off the adjustment knob on the rotor 8 notches, they said 4. Which should I be doing? Thanks! Larry PS - the car is a 98 M3/2. - And if you could copy the reply to my address, so it gets here faster, I would appreciate it!
