This is basically SCCA Street Prepared suspension rules and emissions legal external engine mods (cold air intakes, HFM's, and headers). We can run any wheel width that fits inside rolled stock fenders and run any true street tire up to 275mm wide, so no R-Comp tires. I prepared my car this year using Bob Tunnell's BSP recipe: <http://www.tunnellracing.com/M3toBSP.html> I mostly used the version of his recipe from a couple of years ago and making sure to only do the modifications that are legal for the class. I ran Falken Azenis Sports this year and was able to get 12K miles and 120 competitive autox runs out of set of tires that cost me $500. Since they are real street tires, I just ran them on the street all year. Never changing tires at an event was a big plus after changing tires for more than ten years. I got most of parts through BimmerHaus and Bob Tunnell and installation by Jeff Reitmeir at Reimeir's Werkstatt. I think combined those two guys have about 20 national championships in German cars and 4 or 5 in E36 M3's, so they know a few things about setting them up. If anyone has any questions about the class, feel free to e-mail me. I glad Chris has decided to join the class and hopefully he and I will do well against the Evo's and STi's in 2005. -- Rex Tener rex_tener@yahoo.com

#7. Sears Point / Infineon with TracQuest - Special Deal - from Cheng, Margaret

Date: Wed, 1 Dec 2004 18:04:42 -0800 From: "Cheng, Margaret" <Margaret.Cheng@kp.org> Subject: Sears Point / Infineon with TracQuest - Special Deal Hello, all. There is a great opportunity to go to Sears Point/Infineon Raceway coming up this Monday and Tuesday. Drive in one out of three run groups which would be a minimum of 2 and 1/2 hours of track time for $250/day, or $500/2 days (lunch on your own). Tracquest is a fun group to run with because it's fast, and for those who want to try passing anywhere with a point by, this is a great chance. There's going to be a lot of free track because of the passing rules as well as since not very many people have signed up yet... Mostly, it's a chance to get cheap track time (at Sears, no less)! Hope to see you there! Details below, and at Tracquest.com. If you know of any other advanced or high intermediate drivers that might be interested, feel free to forward this email to them. If you're someone who has done at least 5 track events and want to run Infineon at a bargain price, it's your lucky day. Due to extremely low participation at the TracQuest event at Infineon this coming Monday and Tuesday, I've decided to do something I've never done before: have only two TracQuest run groups (a Faster group that runs under Red group passing rules and a Slower group that runs under Blue group passing rules) instead of three and turn the third run group into a reduced price, no-frills, relatively advanced special run group. Here are the details: 1) There will still be only three run groups total, so each group will still get at least two and one half hours of track time each day. 2) The cost to run in this special group will be $500 for both days or $250 for one day rather than the current $800/$480 TracQuest prices. Because of the substantially reduced cost, neither the elaborate TracQuest banquet on Monday night nor food and drinks at the track will be included. However, you may buy lunch and/or banquet tickets if desired. 3) There will be no instruction in this special group. 4) The special group will run under TracQuest's Blue (Medium) group passing rules, which are passing anywhere with a point by, only on the straights on the right or left without a point by (although everyone should give point by's all the time, since communication is what keeps people safe on the track at a DE event). 5) All makes of cars are welcome. No special safety equipment is required. Convertibles may run in this special group as long as they have some type of roll protection. For example, the roll hoops in cars like the Porsche Boxster, Honda S2000 and BMW Z3 and Z4 are fine, as are the pop-up bars in the Porsche 996 Cabriolet and BMW E46 3-series cars. While you can register for this event on the TracQuest web site using the normal procedure, you cannot pay on-line because of the special pricing for this event. When you get to the appropriate screen, you will need to check the option that says, "Fax or mail credit card info or mail check to TracQuest." After that you can fax your credit card info or call me with it and I will charge you manually. Lodging headquarters for this event is the incredible Lodge at Sonoma, a five-star Marriott Renaissance property. The TracQuest group room rate, which is still available, is only $129 per night - less than half of the least expensive normal room rate there. If you have any questions, please call me at (310) 798-2004 or email me at the TracQuest email address listed below. This is your chance to run one of the best tracks in the country at a bargain price. Don't miss it! What are the opinions of one for the track (track only car). I was thinking of the Ultra lite kit from JB Racing/MPD (unless somebody has a better/more cost effective solution- that is question 1). Question 2- any wisdom on 5.5 vs 7.25 vs 7.875 inch clutches? Yes I realize smaller is better, but I really don't want a super on/off clutch that makes getting the car on/off the trailer difficult and moving around at slow speeds while not on track. In case it matters...the engine in question is a Euro 3.2. Bruce

I highly recommend a short shifter, but can't offer comparisons of particular ones. The options range from about $50 for an OEM MZ3 shifter, to the really nice ones like the Rogue. I found installing it myself was pretty easy; now I have bruises from kicking myself for procrastinating on it. Of course, one of the circlips vanished into the alternate dimension where socks and such are prone to go. I found I couldn't get the circlips off with just fingers, but a stubby screwdriver did the trick. > Date: Wed, 1 Dec 2004 18:40:28 -0600 From: "genova, perry" Subject: > short shift opinions > > I am thinking about installing a short shift in my sedan and thought > you folks must have a variety of opinions. perhaps among them is a > winning approach? #10. [E36M3] Surging from 1000 to 3500 RPMs - from Cheng, Margaret
Top
Date: Wed, 1 Dec 2004 21:23:53 -0800 From: "Cheng, Margaret" <Margaret.Cheng@kp.org> Subject: [E36M3] Surging from 1000 to 3500 RPMs How strange. I hardly ever post, and here I am posting twice in one day. The green M3 (1997 M3/4) started to surge from ~1000 to 3500 RPMs in a rhythmic fashion on the way home from work today. It was almost like someone might be revving the engine waiting at a light, but it was happening of it's own accord while in gear (causing the car to speed up erratically) and it continued to do the surging if taken out of gear. After pulling to the side of the road, Dave turned off the car, hoping that this condition would stop. It took several tries to start the car because it would stall immediately after turning over. Dave then had to modulate the throttle to keep the car running, but then the surging started immediately. Fortunately, he has a relatively short commute, since he "surged" all the way home. Any ideas what may be going on? As luck would have it, our mechanic, Ramon, is going off to Thunderhill for the 25 hour enduro tomorrow... Thanks in advance. Margaret
