This can be fixed for about $5 in parts without taking the transmission apart. What the article didn't happen to mention is that the trans has to be out of the car to get to the sticky detent shaft. Is there a spring that I should replace? It will go to the left but I have to force it. I have heard of this on the list before but I couldn't find it.

Chester, Speaking only for myself, not Peter obivously: I have brought the e36 to the dealer for an A/C recharge and one time, when I was already there picking up parts, they took it in to reset the airbag light and codes... I had the e30 there for something else that I didn't have the tool for and needed done that day, prior to an event. They're right down the road from me and squeezed me in (Actually did the work on the trailer, too). Hence, my recommendation, if someone's looking for a good dealer in NJ. Other than that, I do pretty much everything everything myself, if I have the time and the tools. I have yet to rebuild a trans (probably never will), align my cars, and do A/C evacuate/recharge. Also, 99% of the work that I don't do goes to an independant... Usually better work and better deals. Lately, time has been the problem...with maintaining my cars, my GF's, my sister's, and some friends', oh and that horrible annoyance, work... Actually, the e36 was on the lift tonight, for some relatively minor stuff, 'cos I finally got the time. You have a very good point that I fully agree with and would recommend myself...Do it yourself, or with friends, if you have the time and/or access to the tools. It's great to learn, it's usually alot of fun, and there's the bonus of saving a few dollars.... -Geoff Atkinson '95 M3 '89 LSB M3 2.3 '04 VW R32 '88 P-Car 951 S '01 Ducati 748 '03 Yukon XL Denali- "work/tow mobile" '02 Audi S4-GF's (No wonder I've got something to do at all times lately...:-) ) >-------------------- 4 -------------------- >Date: Mon, 6 Dec 2004 08:59:48 -0800 (PST) >From: Chester Wong <chester_p_wong@yahoo.com> >Subject: Re: [E36M3] RE: Recommendations for 60K service in PA/NJ? > >Hmmm...the car has got to be out of warranty by now. Yes, the car is out of warranty. I'm on the south side of Princeton, but will look where Hunterdon is. I found the place in Philly already - nice website. O.K. I'll bite - are there any capable hobbyists in the area? I do have airtools and even a garage (tight but workable). Haven't wrenched too much on the M3 (mostly brake pads and rotors) but maybe its time... Spark plugs, air filter, fluid changes, all pretty straight-forward stuff. Start by getting a Bentley manual (not perfect, but very good). Some basic tools (hand tools, you won't necessarily need your air tools :-)), and you'll be wondering how the dealer can get away with charging that much :-) Cheers, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 1993 325is #44 JP/A5

Hi Jim, Used to wrench quite a bit on hot Holdens, including rebuilding gearboxes and replacing clutches on a fairly regular basis... my last major job was replacing the engine in my friends Golf GTI (more than 10 years ago, and my main memory is that the engine seemed much bigger than the engine bay). These days I find that lack of time is the biggest issue. Or maybe that's my excuse... #9. Clutch Delay Valve - from Jeremy Conners

Date: Tue, 7 Dec 2004 23:43:00 -0500 From: "Jeremy Conners" <jeremy.conners@comcast.net> Subject: Clutch Delay Valve I've seen conflicting information (ETK, Bimmerforums, UUC.com) on the existence of the CDV (Clutch Delay Valve) on the E36M3. Can anyone confirm or deny the existence of the CDV on a 97 M3? Also, if it has been found, where is it? The ETK shows a generic picture with a CDV at the clutch slave cylinder; however, it doesn't appear to physically be there. Also, the ETK does not give a 'part not installed on this vehicle' when the CDV is clicked. Any BTDTs on our E36M3s? Jeremy

#10. Exhaust Hanger Rubber Mounting (Rear Muffler) - from Jeremy Conners

Date: Tue, 7 Dec 2004 23:50:49 -0500 From: "Jeremy Conners" <jeremy.conners@comcast.net> Subject: Exhaust Hanger Rubber Mounting (Rear Muffler) Does anyone have an idea what I should be paying for the Rear Muffler Rubber Mounting (p/n 18 20 1 401 797)? When I replaced my clutch I noticed that one was failing. The dealer wanted ~$37 for these and that seems quite high to me. IIRC, waaaay back Chester mentioned that these were $25 for the whole hanger. Is there a BMW 'repair kit' for these that is cheaper? Any vendors have these at a more reasonable cost? Did my dealer mis-quote? Jeremy
