It wont get out of the blue on the dial even after 1 hr worth of driving at highway speeds. Actually, when I sit a red light it will climb to the first normal hashmark but as soon as I drive it comes down to the blue again. Sometimes it comes back down to the middle of the blue when on the highway. I would like to know what the general feelings are about blocking off some of the grille area below the front bumper to shut out some cold air instead of changing the thermostat. Will this cause severe hot spots? I think that since there is ample area between the radiator and the grilles that comes off the lower there should still be enough air flowing through but I am not sure. The temps here change anywhere from 20 to 70 in a week. Any thoughts? ************************************************* Please help support the E36M3 list by visiting our sponsors: Bimmerworld http://www.bimmerworld.com Turner Motorsport http://www.turnermotorsport.com Eurosport High Performance http://www.eurosporthighperformance.com Rogue Engineering http://www.rogueengineering.com DIGEST INFORMATION: http://www.bmw-m.net/resources/digest_info.htm *************************************************

#9. head units and connections - from jakeadavis@comcast.net
Top
Date: Thu, 16 Dec 2004 16:09:55 +0000 From: jakeadavis@comcast.net Subject: head units and connections While there's not a specific caution in the 9835 manual regarding power connection, the schematic does show the power connection directly to the battery. With a 26watt RMS x 4 amp, I'd be concerned about the current draw through the stock radio power connection. Yeah, the E36 (as well as a lot of BMWs) are a royal PITA when it comes to aftermarket sound. Using a decent internal amplifier in an aftermarket head unit to drive the input to the stock amplifier is a waste, but is the only reasonable cost approach. You could save a few bucks by selecting a low power output head unit, if you can find one with the features you want. There are a few 'preamp only' head units which could drive the stock amp, but that may be kinda hit/miss. The way BMW put the crossovers into the amp means replacing everything to do any kind of decent upgrade, outside of the 'plug-on' subwoofer. Actually, the stock speakers are so cruddy, even modestly priced separates outperform the stock speakers by such a margin that I belive it's worthwhile. But the speaker install can be time consuming done on your own, or fairly costly done by a competent installer. Buy the Alpine 9835, use its internal amp and spring for a front set of Boston, Infinity, or similar midpriced separates and it'll kill the stock system.

The Naks are not known for their reception quality. The Alpines are known for it. FWIW. It matches perfectly and is almost plug-n-play. It is I-Bus and diversity antenna compatible, so it works with the BMW CD changer and antenna system. Some people have connected their Ipods too. <http://www.waycoolinc.com/z3/01/081501/becker.html> I have one in my wife's 2001 M Coupe and she loves it. The Nav unit works fantastic and the radio/CD sounds way better than the stock CD43 that came in the M Coupe. And the CD43 sounds way better than the stock radio that came in my '96 M3, so I put the CD43 in my M3. -- Rex Tener rex_tener@yahoo.com
