Gauge installation in general isn't difficult, but it is time consuming. Unless you're either a) a complete mechanical/electrical klutz, or ii) desperately seeking a solution to that pesky excess disposable income problem, then I wouldn't advise paying someone else to do it. You'll spend a fair amount of time taking off interior panels, fishing wires, and that kind of thing. It's a satisfying Saturday kind of a job. > 2) Can someone give me the quick list of cooling system to-dos for an > 80k '98? Zionsville <http://www.zionsvilleautosport.com> sells an aluminum radiator or a full kit with additional parts, including the metal t'stat housing. Or you can get that housing from Bimmerworld. Use the stock t'stat/calibration. Use BMW coolant. You wouldn't even think of doing a cooling system upgrade on a 7 year old car and reinstalling the old hoses - right? Neil 96 M3 - Bastard child

Is this > something I can expect to do myself? As Neil and others have mentioned, it should be a fairly straight-forward, but time-consuming task, mainly due to routing of the wiring. I'd also "second" checking with Eastern Motorworks for any kit/wiring/gauge solutions. I got the race car's gauge kit from them - their wiring harness made installing it super-easy. (I, too, am considering an A-pillar pod for oil temp and water temp. I actually use the sunglass shelf for, gasp!, my sunglasses :-)) > 2) Can someone give me the quick list of cooling system to-dos for an > 80k '98? No "ifs", replace the water pump. > Do the hoses need to be swapped out? I would consider replacing all the hoses you can get to. We just did EVERY hose on the M3 during the valve job. It made sense, since the ones back at the firewall was easily accessable, and the one that attaches at the back of the head was showing signs of wanting to blow soon. Removal of the intake should allow you to get to the hoses at the firewall; not too difficult IMO. > Should I just purchase a stock > thermostat housing or is there an aftermarket alternative that's better? I've somehow managed to clock 136K miles on my '99. Many thousands of those miles have been on track too, as I only live 12 miles from work. Originally had plans to turn it into a race car at 100K miles, but that goal's been adjusted to 200K. ha! Aside from some minor work that I've had to do on it to keep it running, I think it's a damn good solution for this particular task. Of course he and his cohort (Bernese) prefer to ride in the bed of my tow vehicle, but then they are dogs so that shouldn't surprise anybody! I don't know why you want to try and fit him in the M3.
