Okay, this is the only part of your story that concerns me. Woman always take their cars to the Dealer or a mechanic. This is why Volvo is developing future cars without hoods that open. A very sad day for us DIY type guys. This is another sign that the World (as we know it) is coming to an end. The solution to your problem is to always tighten the wheels yourself. Invest is a decent impact and torque wrench and do it yourself. If you must have a mechanic torque them down because of maintenance, tell him to go easy and retorque when you get home. I have never experienced a problem doing things this way. Now the wife may call me an idiot anyway, but at least, not for that! Yeah, I noticed that right away when I drove the Mini, so it was a big "yes please" when I saw the LSD in the options list. This is new for the 2005 MY, and only starting with January production. #6. control arm wobbles - from Gary Preece

Date: Sun, 19 Dec 2004 14:21:22 -0500 From: "Gary Preece" <gary.preece@insightbb.com> Subject: control arm wobbles Hey Guys, The ball joint that attaches to the strut is quite loose. Basically, lots of play when I grab the wheel at 3 and 9. You can see the ball joint move. The Bentley says that the outer ball joint is not replaceable on the M3. What are my options? Just buy new arms and replace the bushings? I have done the rear bushings myself which wasn't too difficult along with the Koni's and H&R springs. Which bushings should I get? What is this "BMW special lubricant" that the Bentley says should be used on the bushing? It is a 1995 M3 daily driver, but I am not opposed to some harshness if it improves handling. I do put up with the lightweight flywheel for the added oomph. Thanks. Gary

For fun over the Xmas break I plan to replace the head gasket and valve retainers on my '95 M3 LWT. Naturally I needed to buy parts and tools to pull this one off. Without sounding like a paid advertisement, we are very lucky to have such great independent parts & service guys here in the SF Bay Area. I just wanted to tip my hat to some of them (in no particular order) that I've used recently (and some I've used for years) for new parts, used parts, service and/or advice to keep my M3 and '77 530i on the road: Ramon LeFrancois Bavarian Motorsport 1753 Houret Court Milpitas, CA 95035 408-956-1662 Tony Colicchio TC Design 1747 Houret CT Milpitas, CA 95035 408-956-1526 Rob Dietsch Dietsch Werks 665B E. Date: Sun, 19 Dec 2004 19:12:51 -0600 From: Jamie Howton <jhowton@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] control arm wobbles New control arms for sure, the sooner the better. I daily drive my 95 M3 with Control tech solid spherical contol arm, RTAB and RSM bushings with TC Kline Trackline suspension. The ride is, let's say, very harsh. I actually really like it, you can feel every expansion joint in the highway, turn in is fantastic and the car is just solid. The other options are urethane and stock, both of which are somewhat more comfortable. My wife doesn't like riding in my M3 any more so if you need to carry passengers or are into somewhat of a comfortable ride you should think urethane or stock. The control arms are relatively easy to change, just follow the Bentley directions. I used a generic "pickle fork" type ball joint separator and a 4lb deadblow hammer and they popped right out. Installation of the bushings onto the control arms is relatively easy if you use urethane or stock bushings, just wrestle them on. You might want to warm them up in some hot water to make them more pliable first especially this time of year. The deal with the special lubricant is that it is a solvent and the rubber bushing actually adheres to the control arm. I understand that kerosene works. You need to install everything quickly and then lower the car onto the wheels and settle the suspension so that it gets glued in place in it's normal operating position. I don't know how long you have but this only applies if you are doing stock bushings anyway. I have urethane RTABs on my 330i with stock front control arm bushings and I didn't notice much of a difference in ride harshness when I installed them. I did notice that my rear end doesn't squirm around under hard braking any more. Decide how much comfort you are willing to give up and then choose accordingly. You might also want to call Bimmerworld or Turner and ask for their opinions, they are both list sponsors and very nice people. If you are in the Chicagland area and want to sample my bone jarring ride first hand, let me know. Regards Jamie Howton 2002 330i (For sale) 2000 M5 - Stock (for now) 1995 M3 - Not stock.
